MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2009: Post Application

The monthly stipend, according to my university, will be:

Research student (graduate school) - 152,000 yen

Additional Stipend
3,000 yen - Hongo, Komaba, Nakano and Shirokane campuses
2,000 yen - Kashiwa campus
3,000 yen (Nov. to Mar.) - Cold area adding University Forest in Hokkaido

the basic stipend was also confirmed by the embassy today

WHich university will u b going to?

The additional stipend for for everymonth until u graduate or only for a certain time?

WHy cold area will get additional 3k yen? izzit bcuz the expenses in cold area are more expensive?

Because the addition in Hokkaido is for the winter months only my guess is it's for the big electricity bills, the onther ones are for the whole year
 
visa question!!

so i just picked up my visa today and i looked at the number of entries and it says single...shouldn't it say multiple??

so i email the woman at the embassy and she replies "We usually issue a single visa only to Kuwaiti student but we never heardfrom them that theyhave a problem on re-entry. Judging from that, you do not have to beworried."

BUT I'M WORRIED!!

anyone else get single entry as well
 
I also have a visa with a single entry. But you don't need to be worried. Whether you have a visa with a single or with a multiple entry, in both cases, before you leave Japan to go visit/sightseeing abroad, you need to apply for re-entry permit. You can apply for a single re-entry permit or a multiple re-enry permit, price differs of course for both, but it's not that expensive.
 

where do you apply for these permits??

it's just that wouldn't it make more sense to just issue us multiple entry visas from the beginning...we are students...so it makes sense that we have vacation

I saw somewhere before where do you apply for the re-entry permit in Kyoto, but I cannot remember now, sorry. Maybe at the airport? Or somewhere in Kyoto, not far away anyway. Just search for a re-entry permit and I'm sure you'll find information about it immediately.
Even if your visa states multiple entry, most of the time you still need to apply for the re-entry permission first. I know it doesn't seem logical, but it is like this. If you leave Japan without it, you can only come back as a tourist, your visa looses its validity (they also confiscate your alien card, at the moment you leave Japan without the re-entry permit visa).

There is another concern:

2.9 Family members accompanying working foreign nationals
Spouses and children dependent on working foreign nationals are granted a "Dependent" status of residence and are permitted to engage in the day-to-day activities of a dependent spouse or child of a working foreign national residing in Japan. Activities such as attendance at school fall within the scope of activities of a "Dependent," but work for compensation is in principle prohibited; part-time work (in principle no more than 28 hours per week) is possible if permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted is received.
Applications for Certificates of Eligibility and subsequent visa for "Dependents" may be submitted at the same time as those applications for the working foreign national, but applications for "Dependents" may also be submitted after the working foreign national has first received status of residence to work in Japan.

Meaning, if we bring our spouse there, he or she is not allowed to work full time?
Or they can still go there as a dependent, then look for a full time job, hence change the "dependent status visa" to a full time working permit?

according to what you posted, it seems like a "dependent" is generally not allowed to work. But if given permission, he/she can work part time.

hey guys, looks like I'm set and ready to go. I got my visa and e-ticket itinerary today! btw, my visa, under "no. of entries", say multiple, but I was told that I am still required to get a re-entry permit if I leave. Oh, according to my itinerary, my flight ticket cost about 280,000yen... and its still a economy ticket. I wonder who booked this...

anyways, see you guys on the other side~
 

Standard price for plane tickets when you buy as a full, refundable fare. Most people don't buy these as you can get much cheaper tickets that have fewer options if you miss your flight, etc.

Also, don't worry about the single renetry part on your visa - that's pretty standard (and was what I got when I got the scholarship back in 1999). Unless you demonstrate a need for coming/going a lot (such as business), they generally don't give you that.

i'm applying for 2010 mext and this seemed to be a pretty active thread so i thought i'd post some questions here.
are you guys all going to be attending the 6 month pre-course intensive japanese course?
if so, will you all be attending the course in the same place or at your respective universities?

Congrats on the scholarship all! BTW, if you're looking for some cool laptop deals, check out the rakuten dot co dot jp. Some of the stores on there have some pretty neat deals. I personally would wait until I get to Japan to get a laptop that you can't get anywhere else in the world.
 
We also got our e-tickets here. Exactly as expected, arrival in Frankfurt at 8:30, and flights to KI (for me) and Narita (for the rest of the Israeli group) a few hours later.

Also, 280,000yen is nothing. Seems like our tickets cost twice that.

Tickets here were expensive as well: 580500 yen plus the variety costs (tax, airport fee)... So expensive and we may still take only 20 kilo with us.
 
Thanks everyone for helping with my question, so looks like the official amount for the scholarship hasn`t been confirmed yet...

abeeyo, like everyone said, its rare for students to get anything other than a single entry visa...generally you have to apply for the re-entry permit at your nearest immigration office...there should be one in the major city nearest you (I`d say kyoto definitely has one) getting a re-entry permit is a fairly standard and common procedure, so you shouldn`t have much trouble...

Also, just a thought for people carrying heavy luggage/more than one suitcase...don`t forget there are courier services at the international airports where you can leave your suitcase there on arrival in japan and they deliver it to your house (usually arrives the next day, depending on what time you arrive and how far you live from the airport) costs around 2000 yen from what I read on the Narita airport site...if you use this service you won`t have to worry about carrying heavy luggage on your journey to your apartment/dorm...I`m definitely using it as I have to spend about 3.5 hours on train/shinkansen and change at tokyo station in peak hour!!!

Anyone else thinking about getting some meishi(business/contact) cards? The people at my consulate said that would be a good idea, although its not really necessary. Just a simple one with your name, school, position, email, and maybe phone# will do. Its more convenient than writing down your contact info a bunch of times. hey, its serious business too. Just something to think about.
 

great idea! but i think, if i'm gonna get it, i'll do it when i reach there - yknow, after everything is confirmed n settled etc..
 
Hey everybody.

So for the Malaysians there's this send-off ceremony tmr and I'm sure its been mentioned somewhere - the 2009 scholar's address. Has anyone been asked to give a short speech or something at the ceremony tmr? Just wondering. I thot it would be someone here.

Anyway, safe journey to those leaving on the 1st week of April. I know those not from Malaysia have a longer way to go but i wish you guys all the best!! I still hope to see you all on this forum or if not here, then on facebook (although i'm not really a big fan of facebook. I still don't know how to access the MEXT scholar group after they changed the format)

Btw, is there any way to let each other know, at the ceremony tmr, who's on this forum?
I just thot it'd be nice. Anyway, keep in touch.

there's a taskbar on bottom of the fb page that says facebook applications...click on the icon that looks like two blue people next eachother...that should take you to your groups

omg, did everyone change your money today?
there was a shortage of yen today throughout klang valley!
I ended up going yen hunting this whole afternoon.

And I suppose the price went up today because of the shortage.
Are there really so many malaysians heading to Japan for the Spring semester?
There're only 29 of us (with MEXT), so i doubt we were the cause

I think you have forgotten to deduct those of us who are departing in October... Most possibly the yen is out because of people are going to Japan to travel, as for having a look at the sakura?

In fact, is the exchange rate that low today, so that not many are trading them for that low price... or you are changing too much of cash? (just joking)
