MEXT Scholarship 2015 (Research Students)

In the years 2011-2013 the scholarship application time was the third Wednesday of April, this year it came a little late, for Mexico I called last week and was told that it would be opened this Wednesday April 23rd, I keep refreshing the page in hopes of seeing the new guidelines. As for contacting a Japanese professor I started doing that in January and already found a lab that would take me in in case I'm awarded the scholarship, after that I did not try to contact any other Japanese school teacher until later on in case I do pass the first screening. About my research proposal, I started preparing it since last September. In my case I don't live anywhere near Mexico city and I will have to take a two hour flight.. pfft.. lets just see how things develop. lets keep this thread alive until the end and hope for the best. By the way do any of you know where you want to study? or the area?.. in my case I want to live in the kantou area and the primary school I want to attend to is Tokyo Institute of Technology, but currently the Japanese school I have receive a response from is Yokohama National University
 
Is there anyone know whether can we apply for another scholarship even after we had applied for MEXT scholarship and currently awaiting for the result to be announced?

you could but that would be of high risk, in case you are awarded both scholarships you would have to give up one and if MEXT finds out even if you reject the other scholarship they may decide to not give you the scholarship after all, it is stated in the guidelines. I've read several versions in the past couple of years and have found some probable loopholes but I wouldn't dare to do anything, it would just give you a bad reputation and at some point they do state they can reject your application if they want at any time and that you under any circumstances have the right to argue about the decision

I have contacted several professors from different universities. Unfortunately, i only got replied from 2 professors saying that their lab is currently full with students and is unable to accept more student. I am from Computer Science field as well. ^^ May i know where are you from?
 
Does anyone have a copy of all the application guidelines and forms for this year for research student?, I found the site Government-sponsored but those guidelines and forms are the one from last year and I don't know if either they will not be updated or if they are not out yet, if you read through the guidelines on the PDF it states that it is for arriving in Japan in 2014 not 2015 for our case.
 

These aren't directly to the PDF's but they are on there near the bottom of the page. It's for 2015 and it's from America but I'm assuming it's all the same right?

The application period just started a couple of hours ago in Mexico.

They say that since there is an increase in the number of applicants they will no longer offer help in filling out the form unless you make an appointment and go directly to the embassy. I think this is really unfortunate for those not living in Mexico City, but we will have to deal with it, either filling it by ourselves or making a trip over there.

I can not stress enough to my fellow Mexican candidates, DO NOT FORGET to work in pararell the requirenments for the Foreign Relations Office (SRE).



For everyone else, I hope we can share tips and keep helping each other out until the end

I first contacted hokkaido university for intelligent software laboratory but unfortunately, i have been told by the professor that the current lab is full with students and they are unable to accept more students. If you are curious with this laboratory that i have contacted, please find below the link to it:

After that, i also got another reply from waseda university stating the same reason( Wondering am i not in such a luck to get the preferable laboratory?).

To put myself in a more secure level, i have sent email to seek approval from the professors in these universities; University of Tokyo, Keio University, Saitama University and Tsukuba university. I am unsure whether i will get accepted or not but i will try to check on other universities as well. May i know in which field are you currently intend to research on?
 

I'm planning to do a research in the fields Computer Vision and Augmented Reality. I already contacted a professor from Keio, but so far, he hasn't replied yet. I'm still looking for other professors working in those fields though.

The link above shows the list of available local/private universities in japan(Of course, there are more than the listed one, will definitely need to do some research on this as well). I used it as a way for me to search for the professors, i look through every university in order to find the right laboratory that has exactly relevant approaches as my research topic. My research topic is "Intelligence Software Neural Network for Software Engineering Development".

Should you need anymore information, please let me know and i am gladly willing to share it^^
 
Thank you so much for sharing some thing like this. I'm also keen on getting a MEXT scholarship for a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering / Science. Not this year of course but next year. Do any of you guys have any tips for someone who wants to pursue this field?

Back to your inquiry, could you please specify what kind of tips do you want? For your information, the person who starts this thread has already shared some of the beginner information required. Kindly backtrack the comments that have been posted. Should you require any information after reading the previous posts, i would gladly share any information that i have gathered. ^^
 

I'm currently in at the end of my first year B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering , I will be starting the second year next month.

I've got quite a few things to ask you actually ^^; ok here we go.

1) Where can I look up Universities or Colleges that offer the field that I want to study in my Case Computer Engineering. I've tried multiple websites but I've not really found anything quite specific.

2) For a PG MEXT Scholarship I would need to submit a Research Overview along with a 2 Year schedule right? Since there isn't really much related to my field on the links on the first post, I am really confused and don't really get what "exactly" it is that I have to submit.

3) I have no contacts in Japan whatsoever that being said, I'm also supposed to get an Adviser prior to applying for the scholarship right? How can I do this?

I actually have a few more questions but I guess first I'll have to think a bit and write them down. I also that it may be a bit early for me to worry about MEXT but I really want to go to Japan, to study, work and live there, it has forever been my childhood dream and I am never going to give up.

in my case I looked up information in Wikipedia about the schools from the areas I wanted to attend and then searched for more information about the correct faculty for my major (also computer science related), you may expect to search through several months before finding a school you like, after I found some schools I looked for labs and professors that have researched or are researching in something similar to what I want to study. I know that the information you can find in English or other languages are limited and what I would recommend is to open two browser windows, one in Japanese and the other as a Google translated site (do not use the English site as it contains limited information) and navigate through the menus this helps when your are trying to find a lab.

 
Hello everyone!!

I am joining the fray... I will be applying for the Research Category and my research is on popular culture. I have been preparing for the MEXT since March and I have been able to get 4 professors who stated interest with my research (Osaka U, Chiba U, Sokendai and Sophia University) but as is the rules, I can't seem to be so sure yet until I have passed both the exam and the interview. I will be doing the medical exams next week since that is part of the requirement that we have to submit at the onset.

Like most, I am quite nervous with my application, but I am keeping my hopes high.

What are the advantages of getting in a Public University instead of a Private one. How hard is it to get a MEXT Scholarship for TODAI?
 
Hey everyone! Nico here, from there USA. Anyway, I had a question about the abstract thesis part. it says in the application that we need to attach an abstract thesis of previous work... Does that mean we need to attach the whole thesis? Thanks for the help in advance everyone and good luck!

I don't believe there are any MAJOR disadvantages or advantages when applying to private and public schools. Just apply to the schools you think are best for the research you are trying to conduct. I do warn though TODAI is like HARVARD or any other Ivy league school in USA. (Sorry those are the only examples I know of) It's the best university in Japan, ranking wise, and therefore many people try applying to the school. They also won't let you contact any professors in advance in order to acquire about sponsorship. Trust me, I've tried.

If your heart is set on TODAI, then by all ,means, go ahead. However, if your main goal is to study in Japan, try for a different university. =) Hope this helps!

A Master's Degree and a Research Student are the same thing in MEXT right? Or am I wrong?
 

It's not abstract thesis. But the abstract of the thesis. Which is the summary typically located in the first paragraph in a traditional thesis structure. If you don't have an abstract section, but do have a summary or executive summary section you should probably attach that instead.

To apply for a Master's Degree you typically must pass a university entrance exam. You typically must be physically present in Japan to take an entrance exam. Since MEXT University/Embassy Selection scholarships are typically for people not in Japan you're not expected to take an entrance exam before you get the scholarship. So you enter as a non-degree Research Student and then take the entrance exam while there (It also gives you the perfect time to use that 6 months of provided japanese language training). Of course if you for some reason have taken an entrance exam on your own already but are now outside of Japan again, you can take the scholarship as a full Master's student instead of a research student.

Also for Todai each individual graduate school seems to have their own admission quotas, the result being some fields are extremely hard to get into in Todai, and some are not. You have 3 choices for universities though so you can always take 2 hard to get into universities and 1 relatively easy one as your 3rd choice as a backup. (On a side note, even though Todai is ranked No. 1 in Japan in international rankings, it's not No. 1 based on Japanese Government rankings, that's NAIST).
 
So basically I have to first go to Japan as a Research Student and then pass an entrance exam while there so that I can join a Master's Course?

Isn't there a way in which I can directly join as a Master's Degree Student at a University which has accepted me?

Please help to explain the details as I am interested in getting a "Master's Degree" in Computer Science (& Engineering) for Japan and I do not want to go there as a "Research Student".

A list of the procedure would really be nice
