About exams: English is as always, pretty easy. Japanese: well you don't have to pass it lol :D there were only me and two others sitting in Japanese exam and I was feeling like I shouldn't be there 'cause those two attended Japanese course and I was just studying from the Net lol, I really want to know how I did but they won't tell us
Math. Actually after taking math I was sure that I failed and was very surprised when they called me and said that I'm invited to the interview. Well math is as always - difficult

So you did undergraduate English test?
Was it that easy? What about the reading this is my main concern. :D
 
yeah, undergraduate. it was similar to previous exams, quite easy
 
I don't know exactly, but I'm sure that you have to score in English much more than in Math, so yeah something around 80-90% probably

I don't know what they were trying to do in 2010 because all exams were different lol (not sure about English though, can't remember)

I have been wandering in this forum for a while to get information about mext scholarship.. Since I have gotten so many useful information, I think I should also share what I know... :)
So I've been called to join written test for research student in my country last Monday (18 June). For english section, the type is similar with the test in 2007-2009. While the Japanese section is similar with 2007-2008 test, where it was divided into 3 part (A, B, C). I hope it could help for those who are still preparing for the exam...
This year they have some changes in selection mechanism, such as:
- Those who applied with TOEFL are required to do the english exam first, while those who applied with JLPT are required to do the japanese exam
- Time for english exam is 1 hour, while for japanese is 2 hours
- Not all writing exam participant will be called for interview. The result of writing exam will determine whether you're going to the interview or not. This is different with last years (from what I heard), where you are guaranteed to join both writing exam and interview once you passed document screening.
But maybe those changes (especially the last one) only happen in my country, where the applicants is so massive..? I'm not sure.. It would be nice to know the system in other country, then.
Thus, I'm anxiously waiting for the result of writing test which will be announced in two weeks. :unsure:

I don't know yet how is selection mechanism this year here in Portugal. But, last year for postgraduated students they did a CV selection, than called people for the interview and who was interviewed also did the English and Japanese test. And that's all.

I really don't know the selection criteria. I friend of mine got the scholarship two years ago and he met in Japan others portugueses and spaniards students who also got it. In 2010, 3 boys got the scholarship, and the next year 3 girls got it. Is 2012 the boys-year again? hahah I don't believe that's works this way...

Anyway, I know that here in Portugal they usually chose people that study International Relation...
 
Well, I can't share any information about my country as we did not have MEXT scholarship offers before and so it has just started this year. But what says on the website is only this:
Application Procedure

Application deadline: 17:30, June 8, 2012
Applicants must send all the required documents to the Embassy of Japan by post. Any documents which come to the Embassy after the deadline cannot be accepted.
Written Exam: (second half of June)
Candidates who pass the screening of documents will be invited by e-mail and called for the written exam.
All exams (except Japanese) are in English.
Candidates are not allowed to use any written materials or technical devices during the exams (e.g. calculators).
Interview: (second half of June)
Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited by e-mail and called for the interview.

Well...

I tried the tests on the web page (the 2010 and 2009 ones)... I was really surprised that the most mistakes I have made, were from the reading. Any suggestions how to score higher in this department?
the case is that I understand what i have read but I seem incapable to find the correct answer. :?

And does anyone have older exams than 2007?
And an answer sheet from 2006?

YoYoC, from what category under undergraduate are you? Natural Sciences? Argh! I really had a HAAAAARRRRRDDDDDDDDD time doing the chemistry! Gosh. It's soooo difficult. I haven't been notified yet. But, I agree with you. English is pretty easy. I didn't take the Japanese 'coz we can choose if we will take it or not. Haha. Are you sure they'll base the score more on the English test?

How many test examinees were there when you took the exam?
Were you all undergraduate applicants?

Do you know how many sat for the exam? And how many will be called for the interview?

Hi cherry1! Just like what YoyoC and MsHappyD said, the English was quite easy. The Japanese, I took it though I didn't answer everything :) I think there were 70 or 80 people who took the exam. I do not know how many were called for the interview. I guess the interview is the final stage for the embassy recommendation/primary screening procedure. Thank you and good luck to you too! :)

I am sure you will get recommended. I think they will accept everyone that is interviewed.
 
Just few hours ago, the informed me that sadly I did not pass through the first screening.

what is the reason you can not pass through the first screening？
 
They did not tell me the reason. Just simply said:
"First of all we would like to express our gratitude for your interest towards Japan and your application for the MEXT Scholarship 2013.
To select the candidates, we carefully examined all the applications. Unfortunately we have to inform you with regret that you have not been selected as a candidate for our program for this year.
However, we would very much appreciate if you continue to have interests towards our country and our culture.

I feel sorry for you Anina. Maybe your grades were not good enough or there were too many applicants

I don't know about the grades, since I had 3.3/4 overall grade point average (GPA) and as for too many applicants, hmm..I wonder,considering this was the first time we had these applications and Japanese is not really popular here at all.

I am sorry to hear that. Hope you will have better luck next year.
I am taking the research student english test tomorrow. How was the test anyway? Was it confusing or what are your feelings about it.
