Hello,

If possible could you please explain to me meaning of "kiri kake no ki no" in the sentence below:

わかものは きりかけの きの そばに もどると おのを ふりあげ ぱあーん ぱあーんと きを きった。

I guess, maybe the translation could be

"When young man returned to the tree, he raised axe and with chomp sound cut the tree down."

But I am not sure.

Thank you very much!

verb +かける means to start to do ~ or be about to do ~.
きりかけのき = きる+かける + き
The young man returned to the tree he started to cut (and stopped half way), raised the axe and chopped down the tree.

Note: I myself do not know how I should translate the onomatopoeia ぱあーん which is high pitched sound like the sound one can makes when clapping hands where the sound can echo... 😅

Hello,

If possible, can I ask little bit more. I guess, きりかけのき is a complex noun, that could mean "The tree which was cut a half".

But i am not sure about second の, is it possible to replace it with が

わかものは きりかけの き そばに もどると おのを ふりあげ ぱあーん ぱあーんと きを きった。

Thank you very much!

きりかけのきのそば
きりかけの modifies き (half cut tree/tree cut half way)
きの modifies そば (near the tree)

In this case you cannot replace の with が.

No. "きが そばに もどると" changes the meaning to "when the tree returned to~". The の indicates that "きりかけの き" modifies "そば" or "nearby the tree which was cut a half".

EDIT:
You beat me, undrentide-san.🙂
