Married to Japanese Man

Hello All,
I'm here because I'm married to a Japanese immigrant. My husband, Jorji, came to the United States when he was 12 yo. He did not know a word of English, but became fluent within 2 years. Sadly, after 40 years in this country he has lost all his native language.

My daughter, (from a previous marriage) is deeply involved in the anime world. She travels across the U.S. going to conventions, where she participates in cosplays. She currently works at Disneyland. She thinks she's Japanese, although she doesn't have an ounce of Japanese blood in her.
You may find my life's work interesting. I am an anti-illegal immigration activist (I used to belong to the Minutemen). No, I'm NOT anti-Legal immigrant, obviously since I'm married to an immigrant.

Welcome to Jref. My hubby is Japanese. He's only been in the US for 2 years. He's "legal" too! There are plenty of interesting discussions here, that is for sure! Enjoy.

I see you live in WI. How did you meet a Japanese man? Did you meet him in Japan or here in the States? Does he speak English? How is he liking the "culture shock"?

Do you find there are any cultural differences between the two of you? My husband refuses to go into the kitchen to prepare any food. He would starve before he "disgraced" himself in the kitchen.

He's extremely intelligent. Much more so than American men I know.

Hmmm to make a long story kinda short. We met because he was in Wisconsin studying business English. He was already versed in English because he had lived in Australia for a few years. There are a lot of differences, but we are both accepting of them. I mean, he's really more flexible than I am. It's hard to admit that, but it's true. He's a creative person, ( a childrens toy designer ) so he's pretty laid back and easy going. It's been a lot of fun.

Wow, it sounds like your husband is a wonderful guy. So is mine. Jorji is also very laid back.

It's interesting that your husband is a toy designer. My daughter wanted to design toys and we looked into sending her to a very reputable school in Los Angeles called Otis School of Art. Unfortunately, she is not ready for intense school study. She's way too busy running from anime convention to convention.

My mother and father-in-law are still alive and very active. They are in their 80s. Mama was in Nagasaki when it was bombed. Well, actually she left town and was up in the hills and watched as it unfolded. Sad story.

My husband was born in Nagasaki, but spent 10 years in a suburb outside Toyko. Mama was a school teacher.

My in-laws are a blast to be with. Very fun loving people, but I still feel like an outsider. I'm the only blonde in a sea of dark hair. We all laugh about it.
