Lost parakeet home safe after reporting home address at police station



A parakeet brought into "protective police custody" as a found article in Sagamihara City was safely returned to its owner on May 2, as a result of "self-reporting" its owner's home address.

This parakeet is a 2 year-old male bird owned by Fumie Takahashi, a 64 year-old housewife living in Hashimoto, Midori ward in Sagamihara city. She treasures this bird as it was a mother's day gift from her son 2 years ago. She named it Piko.

On April 29 around 7 am, Ms. Takahashi took out the bird cage to the balcony and absent-mindedly left the door open. One hour later, she found the bird had disappeared from the cage. Around 7:30 am on the same day, a guest staying in a business hotel near JR Hashimoto Sta. found a bird had landed on his shoulder while he was smoking outside. This hotel was about 50 metres away from Ms. Takahashi's home. The hotel staff brought the bird to the North Sagamihara Police station.

The Sagamihara Police took care of this bird, however in the morning of May 1, the bird suddenly spoke his name "Pi-chan", and eventually in the afternoon, he started to state his address, "Hashimoto, Sagamihara City". While a couple of police officers were carefully observing the bird, at around 8 pm, the bird once uttered Ms. Takahashi's complete home address till the last digit of house number.

The police officer visited the address Piko mentioned in the morning of the 2nd, and confirmed that Ms. Takahashi was his owner. Ms. Takahashi was so elated by her bird's coming back home safely saying, "I had my previous parakeet escape, so this time I made him memorize the home address."
