The OP's (or general) rule of shiritori

Rule 3: Nouns only.

甚い - いたい painful;sore
いたい の い

いたい is an adjective.

2)
いたい as the meaning "painful, sore" is written as 痛い in kanji.
甚 means "very," and is mainly used as the adverb form "甚く" in modern Japanese.
e.g.
彼には甚く腹が立った。
Kare ni wa itaku hara ga tatta.
I was very angry with him.

Kanji is tough, indeed.


遺体(いたい): a (dead) body

いたい の い
