Goo says that 消息を絶つ means 消息が分からなくなる。Which sounds like the same meaning as 消息不明.

I guess an 宇宙艇 is a smaller 宇宙船?

宇宙艇 is basically for small ships such like carrier-based ones. 宇宙船 can refer to the all the types of space ships including small ones.

Two interpretations are possible; 1)a conjunction "also/furthermore/moreover" or 2)an adverb modifying 派遣された "additionally".
