Kyoto University 2011 (Monbukagakusho etc.)

We definitely will arrive in the Kansai airport at the same day, on April 1st. I alrdy been to Kyoto U once for the entrance exam. If I can meet you guys, no mattter if the universities will come to pick us or not, I can show you guys how to reach Kyoto U from Osaka, it's actually a long way to go.

Too early for me to pack now. But I'm making a list that I will pack in probably mid march.
 
I am not packing yet, will do that mid to end March, but I am busy getting rid of all my junk that I have accumulated over the years. All my friends are happy because they are getting free stuff now

I finnaly got a call from the embassy I'm in in Kyoto from April.
And I really sorry if this is stupid but can you please give me some e-mail coordinates for the international houses office (for all the emails I have found are either with fatal error or none answered me yet )
:?:?:? I really don't know what to do. My professor is not telling my anything and I'm lost...
what the hell will I do if I cann't be placed in any of the houses when I go there :?:?:?:?

Congratulations.

The housing is a bit difficult if you do not get into one of the international houses. My professor's assistant did the application for me. I would recommend if you have not yet received confirmation about housing that you start searching for a flat or other dorm.

Well thanks for the answer, but just today I recieved my final letter - after all I had couple of letter of acceptance and I wasn't sure where exactly and when (October or April) I would be going to Japan, so I didn't know I had to apply beforehand - after all I could have gone to Gunma University instead of Kyoto (I was told the decision is made only by the Japanese side). And since I still haven't any news from my professor (he has a problems with English) just he sent me a mail that "he will prefer if I come to Kyoto to come in April" so I'm right now with tied hands, that's why I'm asking for direct numbers (with english speaking person) or mails I have to contact and to explain, and I really do hope they will have a place for me in one of the Houses. I was told it's better to be there for all the other international students that are there.
 
Contact JASSO, they should have someone that understands english, and find out about possible accomodation. I know they support students a lot
 
According to the information available to me, it is my understanding that Shugakuin International House is fully occupied, so the only dormitory options available would be in Uji International House or Ohbaku International House. Also, according to the guidelines, applications for dorms must to be submitted on your behalf by your professor so I would recommend contacting him, his secretary/assistant or the administrator for your respective department. Your professor should be able to give you their contact information. I don't believe contacting the dormitories themselves will get you very far, but contact information is as follows:

Hi guys!

This is my first post here, I'm from Argentina and I'm also going with you to Kyoto U in April. My field is Urban Development and Planning, and I'll study at Katsura campus.

I see that most of you have already been placed at an International House, but since Katsura is far away from all the International Houses my professor told me that I've two options:

1) Private market housings
2) Student accommodation of the university

Regarding these options he says: "The second option may be cheaper and easier to apply, but the problem is the inconvenience for commuting to the Katsura campus. You have to change train and bus several times and it may take more than one hour. If you wish to find your accommodation nearer to the campus, you should go for the private market housings, though it will be more expensive than the university's one. In this case, you will stay at a reasonable hotel for a week and find a suitable room."

Which option do you think I should choose? If I choose to stay in an International House, it will be much easier to secure a place than staying in a hotel and having one week to find an apartment on my own… but is true that all the International Houses are really far away from Katsura… Anyone else is going to study there?

Thank you very very much. I just recievd an e-mail from my professor saying that he will try to find me a place...I hope he will manage

I was told that all the houses are OK, the one that's already full was the closest to the university or something like that, but anyway I do hope I get a place.....

Go for option 1.) only if you manage to find a cheap (up to 3000 yen a night) place to stay close to Katsura Campus while looking for an apartment. If you don't, the options your professor gave you translate into:
1. Pricey accommodation far away from the campus, horrible commuting, limited amount of time to look for an apartment.
2. Cheap accommodation far away from the campus, horrible commuting, about six months to look for an apartment.
None is attractive, but 2.) is clearly better.
Also, you must realize that apartment hunting in Japan requires you to a.) find a landlord willing to rent to foreigners b.) finds a Japanese guarantor - I guess Kyodai takes care of that c.) pay up to 5 times the monthly rent amount. Apartment hunting is a pain for Japanese nationals, and is yet a bit more harder for foreigners. Since you'll have a lot of things to take care of after you arrive in Japan, you might want to save the stress of looking for an apartment for later.

guys, I got info that I will be reaching Kyoto at 6am of April 4th, the Tokyo Time.
 
Oh me finally is
I have a room in Ohbaku (although only for 6 months - until september , but at least it's something)

by the way I also will arrive on 4th but in 8.00 I'm supposed to be at the airport - so I'll be like at least 1.30-2.00 hours before reaching kyoto (with all the luggage etc....)
Will someone of you be flying from Frankfurt to KIX?
 
hi, gala, I live in Ohbaku as well. Why don't we meet and go together? I'll be arriving at 6:00 am. We don't need to take the carrier service. I know a cheaper way to go there by bus and then train.
Do you have msn or something?

I also think I know how to reach the place (well I know how to get to the university from Osaka and how to get to osaka from kix), but the more the merrier

I've decided to rest in Tokyo for a night before continuing on to Kyoto, so I will arrive the following day. See you in Kyoto!
 
Dude, you are gonna to give up the free flight ticket and pay by yourself to Tokyo. Wow.
 
It's a really long flight from Canada and there would be a 3 hour wait between flights, after which I would still have to take a train, etc. which would make it far too late to get into our dorms, so I would still have to stay at a hotel or something. I have friends in Tokyo so this just makes more sense.
