The Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer unveiled a prototype fuel cell tractor in 2024. The new version boasts self-driving capability and greater hydrogen storage capacity. Higher efficiency is achieved by separating the drive motor from the implement motor. "We were able to develop [the tractor] by combining the agricultural machinery, hydrogen and autonomous driving technologies that we have built up," said Isamu Kazama, who heads Kubota's team on carbon-neutral technology. "We're very pleased that we were able to unveil it at the World Expo." Commercial feasibility will require regulatory changes allowing the machine to drive autonomously on public roads between fields. Hydrogen supply infrastructure will also be needed.
