According to Korean Yonhapnews, Korean women have increasingly been heading for Japanese market to work as "Comfort woman".

The research said there are some 40,000 - 60,000 Koreans illegally living in Japan, in which comfort woman will account for more than half or some 30,000 heads. In addition, some Young Korean men work in host club illegally as well. Working locations of Korean comfort women/men are spreading across Japan, not only Akasaka, Shinjuku and Ginza of Tokyo, but also Osaka and Kobe.... the report said.

What's the point. Japanese men want to pay for sex?

There's a "comfort women" visa?

I guess I'm also missing the point here.

Haha, they are now rivaling Japan's own numerous comfort people, thats indeed funny, if anything.
Are the Koreans cheaper, btw?
Then the according japanese schoolkids etc. may have to look for other sidejobs...
I wonder, whats left in the end.

Afaik there's been an outburst in many western EU countries over the last decade...but errr...are we really talking about the topic which official name starts by "pro..." ?

If that's the case, I still cannot understand why someone would want to pay for that...

Trafficking of North Korean Women

Similarity between South and North, but South women tend to go to Japan, and North women go to China.

but South women tend to go to Japan, and North women go to China.

Ahem .. It seems some of them enroute to Japan as final destination

* The surprising thing about Yoon is where she came from : North Korea.

She's one of an estimated 1,000 North Koreans who have escaped their country and ended up living in Japan, Weekly Playboy says. Like Yoon, nearly all are female and work in the sex industry, according to the magazine's source, a documentary filmmaker from South Korea, whose name is undisclosed.

How do they manage to flee the world's most secretive country and end up here? Apparently through a long and complicated journey.

"Most of them first go to China and then they move on to third countries because the Chinese authorities are strict these days," the source explains

According to http://www.humantrafficking.org/countries/south_korea

I thought South Korea is one of OECD countries, but a source of sex slave at the same time. The above quote may indicate Sex Slave is one of Korean traditions.

It's not a question of good or bad, but tradition. Maybe.

Sex is the oldest "tradition".

True, and there are many sex business in Japan, USA, Europe and all in the world. And usually women or girls of poor countries have often been trafficked and sent abroad for such business. Poor North Korean women must be the typical case for this.

However, what I really don't understand is the case of South Korean women.

I have never heard about Japanese prostitutes in overseas, and American prostitutes in Japan. But I often heard South Korean prostitutes in Japan, USA, etc. South Korea is not a poor country, and women do not need to go abroad to sell sex theoretically.... What is behind the scene?

I think Japanese woman aren't getting paid....they like to "date" foreign men. I am always amazed at seeing a gorgeous Japanese lady, with a dorky foreinger...what the heck. And don't Japanese young ladies get paid to "date" older men and instead of money they get paid in Louis Vuiton? I don't think Koreans have the market on prostitution.

so everyone here who is not Japanese and married or dating a Japanese woman, I am not saying you are dorky! It's just what I saw in Tokyo...

Yeah. I heard such stories. Some Japanese girls tend to play with foreign men. According to them, Japanese girls may find something different from conventional Japanese men.

In the meanwhile, are there any news about Japanese prostitutes in USA? I am interested in comfort women comparison between Japanese vs Korean in the USA (third country).

There are prostitutes of all kinds here, men, women, all nationalities. Most, though are crack addicts looking to support their addiction. It's disgusting. In Nevada there are legal brothels. I don't know much about them other than they are regulated and the women tested routinely for sexually transmitted diseases and they have to be licensed. I have been told, that the guys can "request" the type of woman they want...white, asian, black, along with hair color, body type.

Well... in France it's supposedly forbidden but I remember once when me and my friend were driving back from our university (which was a few 70 miles from Paris). We went through a forest with lot of these very young girls with tons of makeup...gave me the creeps...

Still...is this phenomenon so common in Japan? oO

Quite apart from the question of whether or not it's in acceptable taste for the OP to refer to these ladies as 'comfort women', shouldn't this thread be titled 'Japanese demand for sexual services driving import of (insert term of choice here)'?

I must stress that I'm making or offering no judgement whatsoever about prostitution, Japan, or anything else by making this point. As Goldie san suggests, prostitution in some form has always been, and will always be. The fact of the matter here is that demand within Japan for these services makes it economically-lucrative to bring girls in from abroad.

As to why the girls work in Japan rather than South Korea well, for those that choose that path (and it is not all of them by any means, it stands to reason) it's pretty obvious that they can make a lot of money in Japan compared to at home for the same work (as with any 'profession'). It's a simple case of salary combined with exchange rates that's attractive to those that choose.

As for Japanese girls selling their bodies abroad: I know personally of one such case, a friend. It's a tragic story. An ex-colleague from a language school in Japan had a parallel life that was absolutely unsuspected by many of us. She went to live abroad, and later the truth came out; that this girl we all very much cared for -an incredible girl, in many ways, a bright star in the sky of life - had long worked the 'night shift' alongside the day job we all knew her for, and respected her so much for.

The possible cause behind her behaviour? She was sexually abused from a very young age by a family member, and had come to see being used by men as part of her very life essence...

Looking over this thread again, and not with any efforts to single anyone out here, at all, I have noticed a bend from the general parameters of the OP.

However, I do understand the reason for that; the OP is very limited in scope, and unless one were to go out and do some 'hit the street'-like research along with the 'crack the books and resource logs, and stat sheets'-like research, one would not be able to have much input here other the obvious--that prostitution exists; that a number of girls are coming from Korea to earn money by that service (as MOS touched on, most likely some by choice, and some not so much so, others maybe not at all) to Japan.

That's it. What else can be said? Any intention to relate the present state with that of other events in history--to whatever degree is known of them--is very likely 'strawman' of an argument. Let's keep it on the present, and on the Korea-Japan relationship level.
