That's too bad, Revenant san, that it didn't work out, I would really have had a great time spending some time talking to you again, too. I had kind sensed the aroma of a 'no go' in the air, but otherwise I had hoped that things would have pulled through for this. We will think about you, and I really think it would have been better for all you to have made here... something might possibly have just clicked.

Steve and I have had a chat this evening and it's all set for our trip!
We will be arriving fashionably late on the 4th while everyone else will be there on the 3rd. If everything goes as planned, we should be there early in the afternoon.
The 2011 Ashikaga-Isesaki contingency includes an expert Hula dancer, so get your grass skirts and coconut bras ready!

That sounds deliciously fantastic, exotic, and alluring--wait just one darn second here... we don't have any coconuts here, shucks... I guess we'll all just have to go with ONLY the straw skirts (we got plenty of straw).
By the way, late afternoon means approximately what time? In the event that you feel you all can make your Mars landing by 1:00 on the 4th, we'll hold off starting time a bit. Can you give me a kind of ballpark figure there?
We seem to be in store for some more rain on the 1st or 2nd of May, and so far the weekly weather looks like it'll be partly cloudy to clear. Let's hope for the latter. It might, however (after that rain), be a bit warmer, and that'll sure help out a lot !!

Well, Ashikaga will arrive at my home at 9AM, as will the ladies, so I'm kinda' hoping we will make it to Mars by NOON actually.
I think Ashikaga was simply saying "early in the afternoon" to be on the safe side, to avoid making a promise we couldn't keep, because on the phone he had kindly and thoughtfully suggested that perhaps my kids would enjoy seeing Matsumoto Castle on the way and that perhaps we STILL could probably make it to our REAL destination by 12:30.
Hey Ashikaga, what do you think, shall we ratchet-up our prioritization of being there for the official 12:30 start? Probably there will be some vital group hell-raising hootin' and hollerin' as the "first" drinks are officially opened and the Commencement Toasts are made.
If we leave my home by 9:30am, and head directly to Mars Man's Wonderland WITHOUT stopping on the way to see that castle*, do you think we can promise Mars Man that we'll definitely arrive by 12:30?
(If necessary, we boys can cut the travel time down even further, by not stopping for restroom-breaks, by utilizing the age-old mystery-school secret-technique: carefully peeing into bottles while driving. ;-) Ha-Ha.)

OK then, what we will do is hold off on the starting, until you folks arrive. (the really official start, that is)
It'll be a long day, the fourth, it will. We'll need to do it right, so it would do no good rushing just to make a time setting, therefore make sure you all take it easy coming up, and when you land, we'll raise some Hell to kick it all off !!
Boy, I had a long day today, but it was well worth it. The dozo is about 90% of what I had wanted for this meet (and in general any way, but I'm good a putting things off [at times]). Tomorrow'll be some finishing touches there, and then shopping, and some BBQ pit area preparations. Tuesday morning'll be neighborhood street work, and in the afternoon more prep on the BBQ area, a little, some more shopping, I guess, and then cooking dinner and running the bus line...THEN, a little pre-event evening chit-chat with the folks here at that time.
Yes, Lledargo san, it'd be nice if you could fly on over to Mars for one of these events ! We do have a great time, no mistake about it.

Hmmm, the next time I'll see Miyuki will be during class on the evening of Tuesday the 3rd, but... from previous conversations: I recall her mentioning her appreciation for the taste of both beer and wine, and I think her friend is similar in that regard. I also remember Miyuki saying that she's gonna' bring some good Shōchū to the party, as well as some fresh-picked strawberries. I'm gonna' bring some of my favorite magic high-pH Onsen Water, to help balance-out all the various types of alcohol that will be officially tested. Sounds like everyone is simply going to have to sample a bit of everything!

OK...and, I might mention, if any of you have any particular CDs which you'd like to share (we have the juke box going almost all day, and definitely all the while we are playing darts) please pack them along too !! I can feel the tension of getting everything lined up for this....oops ... gotta run, I'll check back in once more tonight, tomorrow night, and that's probably it...maybe...until after the event.

Short update over here.
Mike and I arrived yesterday, and enjoyed a few beers and MM's style curry (with green peas
). BBQ is set up, car tire is changed, badminton net is ready so all we have to do is wait for the others to come in and then we will fire up Matsumoto!!!

Pity I could not make it this year (again), 
but I managed to holler from Tokyo down to Matsumoto over the phone and gave them a scare, haha.
It's nice to have had a little chat with you all, Mars Man, Mike, Davey, Ashikaga and Steve!

Thank you SO much, Mars Man and his family for your hospitality!
It was such a pleasure seeing MM and Mike Cash, and finally meeting Davey. In addition, I have made some new friends this year including Steve Red and his two boys (the best behaved children I have ever met. Kudos to their parents!) with whom I got to travel together as well as two of his friends.
The highways were pretty crowded on our drive up so it was around 2:30pm when finally we arrived at MMs, and we were tired and hungry. Of course, our uber-host had everything ready for us! The burgers, the pizzas, the ice-cold beverages.... In no time, we were re-charged and ready for the one event in which I get to make use of some muscles in my body that see no action whatsoever all year... Badminton!! My lower right arm is still feeling the burn as I write this. Who won? Let's just say that Team Gunma has a lot of work to do before 2012.
Then, it was time for BBQ!!! This year was only my second year attending the meet, so I was quite touched when MM handed me The Tongs, entrusting me with the handling of the meats. My inexperience with the apparatus showed when I dropped a sausage (a BIG No-No in the BBQ world), but instead of taking the tongs away from my shaking hand, MM was so encouraging that I somehow managed to retrieve the sausage from the fiery pit. Everything was so delicious I found myself inhaling the meats and veggies only a few hours after I had scarfed down 2 giant burgers and 3 slices of pizza!!
With our bellies full of food and drinks, we moseyed on to the Dozo where we were treated with a mesmerizing dancing performance by Miyuki and Mizuho (two guests that Steve gets credit for bringing along) and a mini-concert by MM (Guitar/Vocals) & MC (Electric Ukulele/Vocals).
Did I forget something? Oh, ya. DARTS!! The badminton matches earlier had taken their toll and I can't say I was at my best... Still, our team didn't lose a single game.
It was a great time. I REALLY enjoyed myself. I want to express my sincerest gratitude to MM again for hosting this great event, and to everyone for their great company.

And now. back on Earth from Mars, I sit at my desk here in my little office, trying to get back into the usually boring routine... all the while still hyper from all the energies that all those wonderful folks who joined in with making the 2011 JREF Meet in Shiga as success this year. It was just fantastic, and ASHIKAGA san has done a great job at reporting on it. (thanks !!)
I was lucky to have found the hamburger buns for the lunch time meal on that Wednesday; and almost impossible thing to find in these basically contryside town stores. I did find some at the Brazilian foods shop, and they were BIG--so for that reason, I had made patties that were about 15 cm in diameter.
It is understandable, but unfortunate, that Thomas and his gang couldn't make it, but I am pretty sure that that will make next year a planned-in-advanced thing !! Also, I hope all who couldn't make it this time, can next time too. I got a little bit more tired this time than in the past, but have to attribute that to not only the cleaning work I had done before hand, but from the overwhelming power which everyone shared with me and little lady MM, as well.
Yes, it was a super time. The badminton was, as always, lots of fun, the Hawaiian dancing performance, and join-in dancing event, were exotic and envigorating, I hope our music was enjoyed enough (I kind of messed up on only one number, so maybe not so bad? [although my voice was shot from screaming during the badminton games so much]). Darts was lots of fun too--the 'K' team (which also included myself also), as ASHIKAGA san mentioned, didn't lose a game (out of three) although it is true that the middle game was not actually won, but just that it was stopped early because to the possible time it would have envolved. That game had the 'M' team in a good lead ahead of us (point wise), and it we have played to the end, had a good possiblity of hving been their game. Nevertheless, we had two out the total of three.
I enjoyed talking to undrentide chan, to Pachipro san (sorry about not having had my phone with me, I was kind of busy and couldn't keep all things so clearly in mind), and Thomas san, and company. Yes, next year calendars are not out yet, but as soon as they are, all you folks will have to mark that week off for nothing other than joining us all up here on Mars !!

I tried writing when I got home last night, but I fell asleep before being able, please forgive the late report:
My sons and I had a great time, we really enjoyed it, and we totally look forward to going again next year!
To anyone thinking of making the trip to the Mars Man mecca: Mars Man is the perfect host and his whole family is so welcoming and friendly. All of the party-members were so cool: MM, MM's Wife, MM's Kids, MM's Kids' friends, Mike, Ashikaga, Davey, Miyuki & Mizuho!
It started with a toast, and a drink (as I recall, I started with a high-quality German beer, the first of many beers consumed that day.) The food was delicious, I ate a LOT of pizza (there were many pies, vegetarian ones were topped with eggplant, green pepper, and tomato) and I had about 10 plates of guacamole with chips, and so much grilled vegetables (with the right yellow mustard for dipping potatoes in), my sons ate a lot of the above plus the big, big burgers (looked so good and cooked with so much love I halfway considered rethinking my vegetarian stance for a bit, ha-ha) and all the other variety of high-quality BBQ meats there were, and at night there were even marshmallows for roasting (which was a first for my sons, a very special moment they'll always remember for the rest of their lives.)
And the Dozou! My kids were so stoked: the first floor had a room with enough legos to build a virtual city! My sons quickly began connecting roads and creating vehicles and characters and situations and imaginative stories. Then they started getting into the world of trains, excitedly laying out the tracks and curves and splits and even some bridges above tracks, then turning on the moving-trains (wuu-huu) and watching them run the courses they had created, they loved it. Then, on the second floor: The Clubhouse. It was the ultimate relax room, with a wide selection of sofas and seats and pillows and blankets, and a wide space for entertainment, with a beautiful background of white-walls and white-ceiling, framed by the beautiful colors of the new-wood flooring and the old-wood original posts and beams. Behind the entertainment area there is MM's room which includes an amazing original chess-board with an extra-dimension added above it, imagined and created by MM himself, which takes the game of chess to a whole new level, artistically crafted with wood and glass. Speaking of glass, there were some beautiful pieces of stained glass custom-made for MM by one of his many friends.
The entertainment was great, Mike and MM are amazing musicians, MM had his acoustic guitar and Mike had his electric ukulele, and together they played and sang in perfect harmony. And Miyuki and Mizuho are super dancers, everyone got so moved by their dancing, we were all clapping and drumming along, and even my kids started dancing too. And then Miyuki showed us some beautiful hula dancing, we were transported to Hawaii.
Then came some strong black label whiskey. Then came the darts, the complexity of which surprised me, I had no idea there was so much to learn about points and technique. The pros like MM and Mike and Ashikaga helped explain to us rookies how to play, and it was so much fun! (Oh yeah, speaking of playing, I forgot to mention about the badminton games we played earlier in the afternoon. I guess I forgot to mention that, because, honestly, I need to get my game-up in badminton, before we meet again next year.) In Darts, I managed to throw a few darts into the 20 slice when needed, but I think out of all us rookies Davey should get some kinda' prize for his inspiring multiple bulls-eyes. We played Darts for hours, before finally calling it a night. And oh yeah, during darts, I learned that Mars Man has done a LOT of reading, and thinking, about the brain and how it works! It's inspiring to see his level of expertise, and makes me want to learn more.
My sons and I were given the choice of sleeping indoors or camping outdoors in a big tent, we chose the tent. Another first for my sons: sleeping in a tent. They loved that! There were plenty of sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, mats, and lights, it was totally comfortable. And the next morning we woke up to delicious fajitas (our thoughtful host even made sure I got vegetarian versions, thanks!)
Add to all of the above, countless hours of stimulating conversation, funny jokes, and warm smiles. And oh yeah, I was able to talk with Undrentide on the phone, a girl with a very beautiful voice who I made promise to come next year, even if it means bringing along her 82-year old grandfather! C'mon, Mars Man needs someone here close to his age! ;-)
All joking aside, I loved it, my sons loved it, and we are very grateful we were blessed with the opportunity to visit your home Mars Man. Thank you again, and see you next year!

Yep, definitely.
And Mike, I imagine that probably the reason you can be brief with words now, is because you successfully took and will soon carefully choose and slowly develop some beautiful pictures worth far more than a thousand words each.
By the way, did anyone else realize (as Ashikaga and I did, on the way home) that we totally forgot to take the official annual "front-gate backside-photo"? Well, next year, when we take the 2012 photo, let's belatedly take the 2011 photo too. I think for such a belated-retroactive time-slip photo-hoax to work properly, we should bring (and change into quickly for the photo) the same clothes we were wearing in 2011, right? ;-)

Nah, I was brief because I was at work and typing on my iPhone. I was right back at work at 3 a.m. on the 5th.
I did get some nice photos from the badminton game, which I am processing in the background as I type this. Unfortunately, Steve, I missed your eldest as at the time he was off playing with Legos. When he came out again I was holding a racket instead of a camera.
I'll be posting a very few photos here, and will provide by PM a link where attendees can see all the photos. I'm pretty sure our gracious host won't mind me sharing his photos here, as he has consented to make his mug public in past years.
Steve, will you please remind Miyuki that I want to get some dance photos of her and perhaps put her in touch with me? I'd like to catch a performance sometime if I can.
