JR East is considering a 10 yen fare increase for its Yamanote Line and other services, effective March 2026. The increase would raise the starting fare from 150 yen to 160 yen and apply to both standard tickets and commuter passes.

While JR East has seen a recovery in its railway business due to increased tourism, profits have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, the company aims to improve the profitability of its rural lines. To achieve this, JR East is considering a more consistent fare structure based on distance, which could lead to higher fares in metropolitan areas like Tokyo.
