Japan's planned burning of radioactive waste may breach international law.
We would like to inform you about the Japanese government's plans to dispose of radioactive earthquake debris by burning it in incinerators.
The Japanese government says it is "low level waste" however according to the environment department of Osaka city council the radiation level in the ash after burning will be 33 times higher.
Radiation will also be released into the air from the chimneys of the incinerators and then could be blown by the wind all over Japan and perhaps to other countries like Korea.
The Government is going to send radioactive earthquake waste to cities all over Japan to be burnt in incinerators. The city of Tokyo has already started burning the waste. Some of citizens in Tokyo have been carrying out their own radiation monitoring and have reported higher radiation levels following burning. There area already reports of health effects including headaches,bleeding noses and other symptoms which people attribute to radiation from the incinerators.
The city of Osaka(second biggest city in Japan) is currently deciding whether to also accept radioactive waste for burning.
The Mayor of Osaka has said that if burning goes ahead the ash will be mixed into concrete which will then be dumped into the sea to make reclaimed land. This will create a risk of ongoing radioactive contamination of the ocean.
The Japanese Government has so far ignored concerns raised by Japanese citizens groups about the proposed burning of these materials even though the
burning could be against international law as established by the 1923 Trail Smelter case between Canada and the USA.
In that case Canada was found to be in breach of international law by allowing air pollution to cross its border with the United States.
Because there is a high risk this burning of radioactive waste will affect Korea as well as Japan we would like to appeal to the people of Korea to raise your voices and demand that the Japanese government stop burning the radioactive waste and bury it safely on land as would be done in other countries.

I asked my wife about this and she said she heard about it on NHK news earlier this week on TV Japan here in the US. She didn't have a lot of details though and I'm not sure which news program it was. TV Japan is basically only NHK so I do know that much.

Living in Tokyo, I do know that the debris (not exactly 'radioactive waste' but debris from tsunami in Fukushima which is contaminated with radioactive) is being burned outside Fukushima and Tokyo already carried out the test burning to see the level of radioactive, etc.

I asked the OP for the source of information not about this fact but other parts such as "Some of citizens in Tokyo have been carrying out their own radiation monitoring and have reported higher radiation levels following burning. There area already reports of health effects including headaches,bleeding noses and other symptoms which people attribute to radiation from the incinerators."
Generally, the level of radioactive must be 250mSv or more to cause such a serious health problem, an acute disorder like nose bleeding.

While there's concern about the project and I do not underestimate the possible effect, I think calling something dangerous without any source of information or actual data but just because of the hearsay can be very misleading and could end up in just being a fear-monger even when the opinion could be a real enlightenment.

I agree, without more information about ruru311's specific claims its hard to say what the truth of the matter is. I would also like to find out more as my wife's family lives in the Kansai region so it could affect them if this is true. I was just trying to give one possible source or the burning of debris itself, I should have mentioned that my information wasn't specifically verifying the original posters statement. Sorry about that.

If the original poster or anyone else has additional information I'm sure quite a few people here would be interested in reading it!

The judge in that case ruled that no country has the right to allow air pollution to cross from its land to a neighboring country if the pollution would have a serious effect on the land or people of the neighboring country.

Air-borne radiation from Japan may have such serious effects on the people of neighboring countries. New research published by American scientists on Dec 19 2011 shows that young children less than 1 year old are especially sensitive to the effects of radiation. This is because their immune systems are not fully formed and are easily weakened by radiation so that they are more likely to catch diseases such as flu or pneumonia. The scientists concluded that an estimated 14.000 people in the USA,mainly children under 1 years old, have died as a result of radiation released already from the Fukushima disaster. The scientists noted that further studies are required to estimate how many people will die in Japan and in other countries.

Burning millions of tones of radioactive earthquake waste will add to the problem by releasing even more radioactive materials into the air and into the ocean.

The Japanese announced on 16 Dec 2011 that the Fukushima nuclear reactors have been safely stabilised (so called "cold shutdown"). However a brave journalist Tomohiko Suzuki working under cover in the Fukushima complex and pretending to be an ordinary labourer found that the so-called "clean-up" of the nuclear waste was all based on lies. He found that there is no effective clean-up taking place and even basic safety procedures are not being followed. For example the clean-up workers are scanned regularly with a machine to check their radiation levels.However Mr Suzuki found that the wire on the machine had been cut so that the buzzer which is supposed to indicate when radiation levels are too high would not work.

If this is how the Japanese government is cleaning up the site of the disaster.how can we trust them when they said they can burn

"Working at Fukushima is equivalent to being given an order to die," Suzuki quoted one nuclear-related company source as saying. He says plant workers regularly manipulate their radiation readings by reversing their dosimeters or putting them in their socks, giving them an extra 10 to 30 minutes on-site before they reach their daily dosage limit. In extreme cases, Suzuki said, workers even leave the radiation meters in their dormitories.

I would like to know how reversing a badge or stuffing it in one's socks would change any readings it accumulates. Common sense says those strategies would do nothing.

A book by Tomohiko Suzuki detailing many of his experiences at the plant and connections between yakuza crime syndicates and the nuclear industry, titled "Yakuza to genpatsu" (the yakuza and nuclear power), was published by Bungei Shunju on Dec. 15.
