Japanese chemist Susumu Kitagawa, together with two fellow researchers, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work on porous materials capable of storing and releasing gases such as natural gas. The trio was honoured for their research into metal–organic frameworks — intricate networks of metal ions and organic molecules — and for demonstrating that these structures could behave flexibly while maintaining stability.
Kitagawa, a 74-year-old distinguished professor at Kyoto University, became Japan's 31st Nobel laureate. His recognition came just two days after another Japanese scientist, Shimon Sakaguchi, also aged 74 and a professor at Osaka University, received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discoveries on immune system regulation. Kitagawa shared the award with Richard Robson of the University of Melbourne and Omar Yaghi of the University of California, Berkeley. Their findings, the academy noted, have opened new possibilities for clean energy storage and environmental applications.
