Following a collaborative investigation between Ibaraki and Chiba Prefectural Police, four Sri Lankan residents of Ibaraki Prefecture have been apprehended for auto theft. Between December 2022 and May 2023, the group is suspected of carrying out a series of car thefts across five prefectures: Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba, Gunma, and Tochigi . The stolen vehicles primarily consisted of vans like the Toyota Hi-Ace and mid-sized cargo trucks like the Isuzu Elf, totalling approximately 110 vehicles.
The alleged ringleader, a 56-year-old resident of Itako, is believed to have identified target vehicles from private homes and business parking lots. The other three suspects would execute the thefts under darkness, transporting the stolen cars to the 56-year-old's garage. Once there, the vehicles would be dismantled, with valuable parts like engines sold by the ringleader through his used vehicle and auto parts business.
