Japanese named best tourists

LONDON (Reuters) - The best tourists in the world are the Japanese, followed by Americans and the Swiss, a survey based on views from hoteliers across Europe said Wednesday.

Japanese tourists stood out for being polite and tidy, securing 35 percent more votes than the Americans who came second.

Congratulations to everyone.

Based on responses from 15,000 European hoteliers, the survey carried out on behalf of travel Web site Expedia showed that the worst tourist nation was France, followed by India, China and Russia.

We foreigners should take a lesson from the Japanese here...

Glad to see that the Japanese do so well outside of their own country.

Now I'd like to see someone do a similar poll here in country, we get roughly 5,000,000 tourists a year here in Okinawa , the majority of them Japanese from mainland.

Polite and tidy? Yeah right. Many are but...anyway I think the results would be more than a bit different.

Although I believe thatis just because most can't understand what other tourists are saying (read one of my previous posts re: German tourists).

Actually, Kiwis tend to have a rather good reputation overseas, especially when it comes to working. A reputation that I find is rather undeserved in reflection of my experiences working here in NZ (it is likely that only those that are willing to work hard are the ones that even make it out of this country alive) - my impression of the average Kiwi employee is that they will do the leas amount possible, only that what needs to be done so that they won't get fired. There is a real crap employee-employer culture here. That is why I'm getting out as soon as I can.

Actually, if it the same survey, the French were rated the worse. The Japanese were rated high by hoteliers because they are tidy, generally don't complain, and aren't cheapskates. But the not complaining may make them seem nice, but it allows some unscrupulous hotels and tour agencies to rip them off.

I heard several stories in Japan, and we encountered one such situation in Australia, but I headed it off by insisting that the different package groups be accomodated. It meant the driver had to make an extra trip of less than a hour each way to drop off some people earlier. He originally wanted to have the 1/2 day tour people wait at a shopping mall while we would have had our safari park time cut from 2 and 1/2 hours to less than an hour.

I kept insisting to him that this wasn't going to work and he finally caved in, honoring the original agreements for both groups. All the parties involved thanked me, and I thanked my wife for pointing out the situation so I could intervene (it was a Japanese tour even though the driver was non-Japanese) and correct what was an obvious attempt by the tour company to do less and still collect full prices from all the group members.

Well, they probably are not so good tourists when a friend of mine who work as a hotel recepcionist booked a show for a japanese and he left without paying..

What you are saying is a super-ultra hasty generalization !
You do realise that that's only one case , right ?
So you can't judge all the japanese tourists , just from that incident .

Yeah, I agree with Ray_Senyu. That is a really bad generalisation to make base don one experience.

The image people tend to have of Japanese tourists is the stereotypical one: really smiley with a camera and a backpack, enthusiastic souls, but is this stereotype actually true? I would be interested to know if the poll was based on actual experiences with tourists or just the stereotype.

I didn't expect anything different. Although I would expect Europeans to rank higher had the survey heard Americans (I'm guessing the British said the French tourists sucks, French said the British sucks, Nordics said that German tourists sucks, and so on).
