Does anyone know if a Japanese N64 game will play on a North Amercian system? I'm pretty sure they wont but I wanna make sure.

probably not without some sort of mod chip, but ive never tried or seen someone do that with a 64

why wouldn't they work? Japanese GBA games work on North American GBA's. But I can't say about the N64, never tried it. I'll ask my kids though, they will know.

Japanese N64 games don't play on North American systems ^^ (I tried it)

They don't eh? Crap, I found a bunch of games at Book Off for dirt cheap. Maybe I'll just buy a used N64 here and bring it back home. 👍

Thanks for the info

I have been told by a close friend that you can modify the cartridges to work in an American N64. It has something to do with filing down part of the plastic on the inside of the cartridge...where it plugs into the N64 bus. He swears that it works on his system...I haven't tried it myself though!

We had this conversation while in Toys-R-Us today discussing whether the Japanese DS games would work in a US DS Lite and vice versa.

DS games are regionfree ;-) I have a lot of games from Japan on it :) Most of the time the Japanese shopkeepers don't even know this at all...so much for being up to date

Thanks Rock....the storekeepers didn't know anything and just warned against buying the games because they don't want to do any returns!

They did offer to let me bring in my DS to try a display game to see if it would work though!

Technically they do, but the cartridge doesn't fit.

ign64.ign.com has a guide to make them fit, though...

I think that ALL handhelds are region free. Consoles, not so much...
