The competition was intense, with about 20,000 applicants. The selection process involved an English video message and a Japanese essay, and Yuki was among the few who made it through.

Yuki Takeuchi is currently a senior at Tottori Johoku High School. As a member of the school's track and field team, he competed in the 800m and 1500m races at this year's Inter-High School Championships. Additionally, he excels in academics and recently passed the Eiken Pre-1st Grade (a high-level English proficiency test). Truly, he is a student who embodies both intelligence and athleticism.

This modification was carried out by Mitsubishi Nagasaki Machinery Works, a company based in Nagasaki City that specializes in general machinery manufacturing.

The generator is expected to produce enough electricity in one year to power approximately 800 households.

Local elementary and high school students from Naru Island, who designed the printed artwork on the generator, were invited to the unveiling ceremony and presented with commemorative gifts.

The demonstration experiment will last for about one year starting next month.

Munakata City plans to collect data on growth conditions and potential damage from herbivores and aims to commercialize the project as a new source of income for local fishermen.

What is Hijiki?

Hijiki (Sargassum fusiforme) is a type of edible brown seaweed commonly found along the rocky coastlines of East Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea, and China. It has been consumed in Japan for centuries and is often used in traditional dishes.

Hijiki is rich in dietary fiber, minerals (such as calcium, iron, and magnesium), and antioxidants. It is typically harvested from the wild, dried, and then rehydrated before cooking. Popular ways to prepare hijiki include simmering it with soy sauce, mirin, and vegetables or mixing it into rice and salads.

In recent years, hijiki has also been studied for its environmental benefits, such as carbon absorption through photosynthesis, making it a potential resource for carbon neutrality efforts.

Arsenic in Hijiki

Hijiki seaweed (Sargassum fusiforme) is known to contain relatively high levels of inorganic arsenic, a toxic substance that can pose health risks if consumed in large amounts over time. Various food safety authorities, including those in the UK, Canada, and Hong Kong, have advised against regular consumption of hijiki due to its arsenic content.

However, in Japan, hijiki has been traditionally consumed in small portions as part of a balanced diet, and its health benefits, such as high fiber, calcium, and iron content, are also recognized. Some studies suggest that soaking and boiling hijiki before consumption can help reduce arsenic levels to some extent.

While occasional consumption is generally considered safe, individuals concerned about arsenic exposure may choose to limit their intake or opt for other types of seaweed, such as wakame or nori, which contain significantly lower levels of inorganic arsenic.


Methods for Removing Arsenic from Hijiki

Since hijiki seaweed naturally contains high levels of inorganic arsenic, proper preparation methods can help reduce its arsenic content before consumption. Here are some commonly recommended techniques:

Soaking in Water

Soak dried hijiki in plenty of water for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Change the water several times during soaking to help release arsenic.
Boiling and Draining

After soaking, boil hijiki in fresh water for 5–10 minutes.
Drain and rinse the hijiki thoroughly with clean water.
Some studies suggest that this process can significantly reduce arsenic levels.
Cooking with Other Ingredients

While this does not directly remove arsenic, cooking hijiki with other ingredients such as vegetables or tofu may dilute the overall arsenic concentration per serving.
Choosing Alternative Seaweeds

If arsenic is a major concern, consider consuming other seaweeds like wakame, kombu, or nori, which contain much lower levels of inorganic arsenic.
Although these methods help reduce arsenic content, they may not completely eliminate it. Therefore, moderate consumption of hijiki as part of a varied diet is recommended.

The "Otsuna-kake Shinto Ritual," a traditional event with a history of 1,300 years, was held on February 2, 2025, at Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture.
Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine is said to be Japan's oldest shrine, dedicated to the deity Izanami-no-Mikoto. The ritual involves connecting a massive rock, approximately 45 meters tall, to a pillar within the shrine grounds using a sacred rope (shimenawa) about 170 meters long.

Held twice a year, in spring and autumn, the ritual is performed to pray for good health and well-being. It is also designated as an intangible cultural property of Mie Prefecture.

It is believed that touching the sacred rope tied to the massive rock brings divine blessings, attracting many worshippers to the event.

During the ritual, 300 parishioners pulled the shimenawa from the coastline and successfully secured it to the shrine grounds.

Today is Setsubun. Next month is Hina Matsuri, the festival for girls.

A survey conducted by Oita Prefecture has revealed the presence of 705 underground cavities beneath roads.
Governor Sato announced in a regular press conference that, so far, none of these cavities have been linked to sewer pipes, which were suspected as the cause of a recent sinkhole incident in Yashio City, Saitama Prefecture.
Since 2015, Oita Prefecture has been using radar technology to inspect approximately 1,400 kilometers of prefectural roads for underground cavities. By the end of the 2023 fiscal year, a total of 705 cavities had been identified.
Most of these cavities were less than 50 centimeters in height, but nine were found to be over one meter tall. Repairs have been carried out as needed.
Additionally, none of the cavities were found to be caused by sewer pipes, unlike the suspected case in Yashio City.
On January 31, Oita Prefecture requested 14 municipalities involved in sewer management to conduct inspections to prevent similar incidents.

At a hotel in Tokachigawa Onsen, located in neighboring Otofuke Town, staff had to manage disruptions caused by halted public transportation.

  "Since we had guests who relied on public transportation, we arranged shuttle services to Obihiro Station ourselves. Food deliveries were completely halted, so we managed with our stock of ingredients."

The famous Sairinka festival at Tokachigawa Onsen was also affected.

The event, featuring stunning light displays created with agricultural materials, had to be canceled until the 7th due to heavy snowfall burying the venue.

"We're not yet in a position to welcome visitors. Many people look forward to this event, so we're doing everything we can to make it happen."

Agricultural Damage

In Memuro Town, next to Obihiro, a vinyl greenhouse used for shiitake mushroom cultivation at a welfare service facility collapsed under the snow.

Signs of Recovery

Meanwhile, signs of daily life returning are visible. At a supermarket in Makubetsu Town, residents who had been unable to shop due to the snow were finally able to restock essentials.

Schools Resume, but Challenges Remain

Schools in Obihiro are set to resume classes on the 7th, but due to unplowed roads preventing lunch deliveries, only morning classes will be held. The lingering effects of the snowfall are expected to continue for some time.

The day after the intense struggle of the world-famous Kokubunomiya Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festival), Ryota Kato (26), who fulfilled the prestigious role of Shin Otoko (Sacred Man), appeared live on CBC TV's Chant! on the 11th.

The "Last Meal": White Rice, Pickled Radish, and Hot Water

About five hours before the Hadaka Matsuri struggle began, Kato had his final meal. He had spent three days and three nights secluded in the Naoiden, purifying his body with only white rice, pickled radish, and hot water.

A native of Inazawa City, Aichi Prefecture, Kato, now a company employee, has participated in the festival since the age of three. This year, on his second attempt, he drew the winning lot and was chosen as the Shin Otoko.

Looking Back on the Festival with Shin Otoko Kato

On the afternoon of the 10th, the excitement at Kokubunomiya reached its peak.

Kato appeared on the shrine's approach at 4:31 PM, passed through the difficult Romon gate at 5:18 PM, and headed toward his final destination—the Naoiden.

During the chaotic struggle, the hikiyage-yaku (lifters) desperately tried to grab hold of Kato, while the Hadaka Otoko fought to touch him in hopes of transferring their misfortunes onto him. The intensity of the struggle peaked.

Finally, at 5:31 PM, Kato successfully entered the Naoiden.

Risking His Life in the Struggle: "I Felt No Fear or Anxiety"

I could only see feet. But I could clearly hear people calling my name, and that alone gave me strength.

On February 11, 2025, the Toyohashi Oni Festival, a traditional event said to have continued for over 1,000 years, was held at Akumikambe Shrine in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture.

The Toyohashi Oni Festival, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, is a springtime herald for the Higashi-Mikawa region. On the second day of the festival, the main event, "The Red Oni and Tengu's Playful Battle," took place.

During this ritual, the fierce deity Red Oni is chased and disciplined by Tengu. After being defeated, the Red Oni flees the shrine and, as a sign of apology, scatters Tankiri Ame (a traditional candy) and white powder, turning the surroundings completely white.

It is believed that covering oneself in this powder and eating the candy wards off misfortune and prevents illness in the summer.

On February 11, 2025, the day after the Hadaka Festival, many visitors gathered at Kōnomiya Shrine in Inazawa City, Aichi Prefecture, to receive pieces of the Giant Kagami Mochi that had been offered during the festival.

It is a tradition for the Giant Kagami Mochi to be distributed on the day following the Hadaka Festival, and from early morning, long lines of worshippers formed at Kōnomiya Shrine.

Standing at 2.4 meters tall and weighing approximately 4 tons, the massive rice cake was cut apart using hammers and axes.

The Lemonade Stand movement began in the United States when a young girl with childhood cancer started selling lemonade to help others battling the same disease. Since then, it has spread worldwide.

At the "roca" venue in Tsurumai, Showa Ward, eight organizations have come together to sell lemonade, chiffon cakes, and more, with proceeds going toward childhood cancer treatment and research.

Yoshiko Toyoshima of the Aichi Childhood Cancer Association:
"We want people to know that childhood cancer is not about pity. We are all connected, and we want to show our support."

The event runs until 3:00 PM on February 15.
