Can some kind souls please recommend some tools for me to learn Japanese on my Pocket PC PDA? Prefer free ones but if not, I am willing to pay for it. Thank you very much!
I would recommend you start with King Kanji, which you can download at www.gakusoft.com. I run it on a Palm but I think it has a Pocket PC version too. Basically, it's a flash card program. The trial version is free for 30 days, then you have to buy a registration code for $24.95. The nice thing is that it comes with built in lessons for the two popular Japanese textbooks, Genki (which we use at our school) and Youkoso. It also comes with JLPT lessons, which is nice if you are planning to take JLPT. I made my own flash cards for it last weekend, which wasn't that difficult once I figured out the format.
I also tried out SuperMemo and Learn Alpha but I didn't find them as useful as King Kanji.
I'm still searching for a good bidirectional dictionary. PAdict is OK and it's free, but seems to be rather limited in its entries and it's only Japanese to English. Pocket Lingo also makes a pretty nice one that is not free. It's $34.95 but it's bidirectional. The only problem I see with it is that when you do an English to Japanese search, the definitions use a lot of Kanji that I don't recognize. I only know about 250 or so Kanji. If you know more Kanji you might like this product. It's free to download and try out but the trial version limits how many words you can look up.
