Japanese officials moved to address the growing mpox threat on Friday, following the World Health Organization's declaration of a global health emergency earlier in the week due to outbreaks in Africa. The government is developing a response strategy, including data collection on infection rates in affected countries and enhanced awareness campaigns for international travellers.

The officials confirmed they would continue the inspection and medical measures established during the 2022 global pox outbreak. On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry issued a Level 1 infectious disease alert for seven African countries, advising travellers to take precautions against mpox when visiting these nations. Health Minister Keizo Takemi announced at a press conference on Thursday that Tokyo is preparing to supply Congo with Japanese-made vaccines and other products in response to a request from that country.
