Japanese Art Bowl

Any idea on the maker or age of this ceramic Japanese bowl ?I believe it could be from the 1940's. It measures 10" in Dia Has a scene on the inside also.

Hello RDPBMW,

The porcelain is of a kind known as Kinkozan, and the mark is "Kinkozan Tsukuru" (窶ｹﾃ打津ｵﾅｽR窶伉｢).
(You have the mark upside down in your picture. Don't sweat it. It happens all the time.)

I wish I could tell you more about the vintage. It looks like a nice bowl. If it authentic, it could be much older than you think it is.

Thanks for the information. I will do a little more research on it for the age. I believe it was brought back to the us by a service man stationed in Japan in the 1940-50 's era. It could be an older bowl also. I also have some neat paintings on silk that have a mark like that so i may post them also. Thanks Again

Would that not be read "zukuri" instead of "tsukuru" in that usage?

The references on the site I linked to earlier, and the entries for similar items on ebay, etc... all say "tsukuru", and I'm inclined to think tsukuru is right because its a maker's mark and not an adjective used to describe the porcelain. Actually my guess would be either "zou" or "tsukuru", but the consensus seems to be tsukuru.

The consensus might very well be wrong. Toritoribe-san probably knows...

Kinkōzan(錦光山) is the name of a potter(陶芸家) or pottery(窯元), so 造 is a verb in this case. The reading is therefore "tsukuru" or "zō". I prefer "zō" since there's no object there (not 造之, for instance).
