I do not get it. Japan has a population decline, but tons and tons of adult entertainment. You would think the popluation would be booming.

I saw this post on the japantoday forum too...

Adult entertainment has nothing to do with procreation. Unless you remove the proc-.

The cost and time of raising a child are simply not attractive to some Japanese. With how much money parents sink into their children, sometimes housing them into their late 20s, I can see why. Children can be a joy, but only if they're wanted.

Also, that's not much of a reference to start a discussion.

The Daily Yomuri said:
It is feared, first and foremost, that the labor-force segment of the population, a basis for economic activities, may diminish as a result of the shrinking and graying population.
I really don't think that the first and foremost concern is the labour force, as you could solve the problem partially by being more open to imigration...

It's a shame that it takes a 'crisis of identity' to get Japan to toughen it's equality laws--- And no, pornography has nothing to do with procreation--- probably keeps some salarymen company on lonely nights though. I also don't think Japan is a nation of pornography addicts...

Having children and getting a house to raise them in, in Japan is very cost prohibitive, there are younger, poorer people having 2-3 children, that I know of just in my neighborhood (my area is kind of in the sticks so this is more prevalent here than in say Tokyo)... Add this to a society that encourages crass consumerism across the board, freeters staying at home with their parents well into their twenties.... at some point in time Japan is going to have to seriously tackle it's economic problems or it's race population will be the least of it's worries.

From "outside" japan. It sure seems like it. But again I am, on the outside looking in (internet, newspapers, trends we hear about it, magazines, products sold with English subtitles).

But again adult entertainment, or sex even create a child (birth control, abortion..)

.

I've found that people will find the most selacious bits of information to re-tell whenever making a documentary or writing about Japan.

In general, robots, sex, manga, anime, fetish--- I would say that the idea of pornography is much more entrenched in the United States than it is in Japan--- I believe porn is mainly seen as an otaku thing...

... seen as an otaku thing...

What does that mean "otaku thing" . And you can't deny, adult entertainment seems to be more open in japan, than many places.

1. otaku

Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer).

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet.

Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etcotaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!)

Dont know about the availability of porn in Japan though JackInBox, But any way I can tell that around 2020 Japan will be overpopulated. Trust me
By the way im leaving for Japan in less than 2 years, anyone who knows of a good travel agency?

Here is the whole article:

i always get chewed out for posting whole articles (concern/panic/hyper-ventitlating over copyright)

Yes, but you get this lovely message:

Yeah...if you go looking for porn DVDs on amazon.co.jp, they ask whether you are 18+ or not. They don't sell porn DVDs to just any old doink. Although, naturally, doinkies imagines that many people try to fake that they are 18+. XD

Well you posted only a couple of sentence from the article, that's a good thing, and I normally do that too. But there are people who want to read the whole article, so its best to always put a link to that page after a couple of sentences.

sorry

At first glance, yeah, you would think there would be a link (even though sex does not necessarily = procreation, XD) because, well, contraceptives have failure rate also. << (I've not the infos on the abortion rate in Japan.) But it's possibly the other way round, sort of an inverse effect? Because "adult entertainment" doesn't mean "sex" really... well of course it could be included, but when I think of "adult entertainment" I think of porn DVDs, magazines, "adult" manga, sex toys, lap dance clubs and that sort of thing. All of which don't necessarily have to involve actual sex. Maybe it is more that, if people don't have good sexual relations with their home partner, = less children born, but more need for "entertainments" outside of that.

If you put an article within quote tags and cite the source by giving a link along with it, no one gets chewed out.

Why?

Abortion.

The abortion rate in Japan is quite high, and also with the cost of living and education along with the responsibility to assist with other family care, most families do not have many children. Check into the statistics and research on Japanese birth control and abortion. Also look into the family civil law code of Japan and the social structure and you'll quickly understand why often when a young woman gets pregnant it either results in a VERY quick marriage, or an aborted fetus. A vast numbers of babies are born far under the "9 month conception" terms. There is a very different view on the pill as well from America.

I think they think The Pill is too dangerous. Too harmful to their bodies. Hell, a Japanese friend of mine wouldn't even take her pre-natal vitamins when she was pregnant! "I don't want to swallow a PILL".

I have heard stories, first-hand, of Japanese women who have had several abortions. It sometimes seems they use it as just another form of birth control. When you do that, I think it's much worse than taking a somewhat mild hormone-altering pill. I was surprised at just how common abortion is over there. I am very pro-choice, but I don't believe it should be used as another form of birth control. It's very harmful to your reproductive organs if you keep doing it over and over again.

I can see why women don't want to have children, though. I know how that is first-hand too. My husband is not a very doting father and he's gotten to where his help with the children is very, very limited. When his sister was here visiting with her son last summer, I also saw what a hard time she has. Her son is a complete terror, and why? Because he's left alone everyday until his parents come home, for one thing. We also found out that his father lets him do as he wishes. My husband tried to discipline him while he was here, and he would talk back to him and say "my father lets me do anything I want!". Any child who is sadistic enough to honestly try to choke his four year old cousin, at the age of eight, has some serious problems.

My husband, probably like her husband, appeared to be different before marriage. My husband always acted like he loved children, and anytime we were around children, he'd be so involved with them. Of course, as soon as we had our own, he changed. It was suddenly left up to me.

So, if most Japanese males are this way(which I think they are), you might be able to understand why the birth rate is dropping.

I've heard quite a few stories like yours Kireiname. It seems that the Pill is seem as medically dangerous, but as you pointed out multiple abortions is going to be far more damaging to your organs than the Pill. I know many situations where the Pill is actually used sometimes to help stabilize hormones in certain situations.

While every case is different, there is the issue of husband behavior and involvement. Many women really don't want to become slave housewives in Japan. While this situation varies a GREAT deal from couple to couple and I cannot really go in to depth because of my limited knowledge and experience with this specific aspect, I do think it leads to the problem. Of course, I have seen extremely good involved fathers as well in Japan.

I think it really is a combination of issues though. From birthcontrol situations, family law, cultural issues, and maybe just the current decade's society. It is a very interesting topic.

Japan women, children, life stress,

.
.
The cost of living is becoming high in America. But Hispanics in America, with a lower income than white Americans, cherish a large family. The have large families (all on average, of course).
.
Its an attitude also. What with the Internet, computers, satellites, Wall Street, could be in Iowa. Cheaper than New York City.
.
Japan could do something like that, or flood their country with cheap labour from the Phillipines (like American has people from Mexico). They are strong Catholics, love big families, and work hard.
.
.
NOTE: Italy (yes Italians), has the lowest birth-rate in Europe. Something has been lost with modern society.
