"I've Oftened Wondered..."

I would like to start a thread welcoming genuine questions that folks may have had in the back of their minds from time to time about the Miscellaneous Things in Life; anyone who actually has the answer to a question would simply quote the question and provide an answer.

Sort of like the "How come hot dog buns come in packages of 10 and hot dogs only come in packages of 8" kinds of wonders...

Or the "I wonder if they ever did find real evidence of the Loch Nes Monster" kind of things...

Not so much meant to be a serious discussion thread (besides, we already have a section for those)... Just a little "by-the-way" kind of of thing.

And I'll start off with this:

I've read from/heard from several places how the number of strokes in a name in kanji/hanzu can determine if the person of that name has bad or good luck in their lives. I've often wondered how that works?

That kind of numerology based on the stroke counts is very common and I think a large percentage of parents check the stroke counts of the names they give their children even if they don't particularly believe in it.

This is particularly relevant to me now as we are choosing the name for our future baby and my husband asked me to check the stroke count just in case. Thankfully the names we liked had a lucky number of strokes, but I don't know exactly how it's calculated myself. Here's a link to a page about it.

I've oftened wondered if I could mail letters for free. If I were to write a letter to someone, then on the envelope put my address in place of the recipients address (destined address) and vice versa. Would the letter be sent to the person that I intended without a postage stamp? Does this make sense to anyone?


Example envelope:

Sure it makes sense. You're hoping that when the letter gets returned to sender, that it will find its way to the person you intended to send the letter to instead of you. I don't have an answer for you on that one unfortunately. I just wanted to encourage you that you conveyed your inquiry well.

You could always try it and see what happens.

Can one reject elements of the Nicene creed and still be considered Christian?
