I would say so...

1. Japan is both western and eastern, traditional and modern.
2. Sex is considered a more of the sport and recreation issue...but verbalising love and emotions is a virtual tabu.
3. Ancient juxtaposes the modern.
4. People are both polite and rude...depending on the circumstances.
5. Hi -Technology and archaic customs sit side by side.
6. Female nudity is partialy sensored, but sex fetishes are not.
7. Society enjoys one of the highest incomes per capita, yet people live in tiny crammed quarters.
8. Sin doesn't exist in Japanese religous code, but pride is the paramount.
9. People speak about freely about sex, but they are silent about love...
10. Chopin-who's music is the quintesence of romantic love and emotions...is considered "national" composer of Japan...the country where people........ never speak about love and emotions!!!

And how do you know, what are facts and what are generalisations in that issues? I noticed you lived in Japan no more then 3 months, and I lived there for 1 year..So your experience is certainly not more extensive then my own.

Plus, I'd thank you if you didn't tell me what I should or shouldn't say. Again this is forum dedicated to cultural diferences, please consider that not everybody here will think American way...simply because not everybody here is American. I'm originally from Europe where people don't care much about so called "political correctness"...

One of the my friends, who is a member of minority has made good point once, when he said; "My people don't like when others make generalisations and stereotypes about them....because it is....usually truth"

It's true that I've spent a limited amount of time in Japan, but I spent that time actually living with Japanese families, not as a member of the military (which I understand is quite a different living situation). I've also practically lived with my girlfriend for over two years. She is Japanese and your claims couldn't be more off base about her or the other Japanese people I am close to. I don't really care to weigh my experience against yours, but whether it is more extensive or not, you certainly seem to be much more embittered towards a way of expressing emotions that you don't understand very well.

I also don't really care for political correctness, I've just noticed that you keep rephrasing the same complaints about your own sour grapes. You don't have to pay attention to my request, I was just hoping that you had more to offer up for discussion.

Chopin music and Japanese

I don't really care to weigh my experience against yours, but whether it is more extensive or not, you certainly seem to be much more embittered towards a way of expressing emotions that you don't understand very well.

"Culure Shock" forum in its subtitle, tells clearly that is it dedicated to discussing cultural differeces...and this is exactly what I did here. This is not informational forum...and it's not it's purpose is to make westerners understand and accept Japanese culture as it is...it's purpose it to discuss diferences.

I am a big fun of the music of Frederic Chopin, who was my countryman after all...I think I'm just as uncorrigible romantic as he was...yet the extend of his popularity in Japan it surpises me... he is suprisingly also considered Japanese "national" composer.

This is stark contrast... that Japanese prefer expresing their emotions through the music, still Chopin life and his music was charged with affection, emotions, and yearning for love....And he was really vocal about his feelings....unlike Japanese.

I find it endlessly amusing when people who haven't lived in Japan long enough to have worn out the underwear they brought with them begin questioning the length of each other's stay and what weight it may lend to their statements.

Because there have been numerous threads about the same thing. Discuss it there, not make a dozen threads about it.
