It's 'sake' and should be pronounced as each alphabet represent.
Many English speakers pronounce it as 'saki', and I believe it leads to the incorrect spelling 'saki'.

Haha, yeah, it's SakE. My Japanese husband often sort of 'gives in' to our British friends and starts talking about 'saki' to them. I get frustrated, yap at him he should respect Japanese language and pronounce it the Japanese way, not the English way, but he tells me he doesn't want to make things difficult for his friends..

The closest way that I can think of to approximate the pronunciation in English is "sah-keh".

Of course, pronounced in the wrong intonation you can also get "salmon", but that's another problem entirely.

I found it so hilarious when I first came to Japan and all the English native speakers pronounced the things in a way neither I nor the Japanese would understand.
It's not their fault, though. The phonic system of English is just completely different from the Japanese one.
A lot of English native speakers have thus a very strong accent in their Japanese.
Luckily there are some exceptions, too.


"Saki" does exist in Japanese, but it's most likely a girl's first name.
"Sake" is the correct spelling for the rice wine.

I noticed that the actual effort it takes for some english speakers to mimic what they consider a natural japanese accent is so great they make funny faces when speaking, as if they had a stroke or something. Everytime they switch into japanese-mode they unknowingly change to their fuglyface. And yet it sounds very "thick". I don't agree that the trick to sounding more "natural" in japanese is trying to sound as if you had horse tranquilizer in your mouth when speaking.
