Wow. That's quite long. Just answer the four questions if you cbb to read it all. よろしくお願いします。
First of all I shall outline what I think I know about these interrogative particles
だい - Used after an interrogative word. (どうだい?・あの人は誰だい?)
かい - Used at the end of a sentence where there are no interrogative words. (そうかい?・あなたは、あのところに行ったかい?)
か - A general interrogative particle that can be placed at the end of pretty much any sentence to indicate a general question (or surprise, but that may be different). COULD replace any of the others.
の - An interrogative particle that can be used after verbs or both types of adjectives (な adjectives need なの). (どこに行くの?・あのゲームおもしろいの?)
Questions:
Q1. How would そうかい differ from そうか? Why use it? What kind of person uses "かい"? It doesn't seem common.
Q2. Similarly, how would どうだい differ from どうですか?Why use it, what kind of person uses "だい"? Does not seem common either.
Q3. I said か could replace any one of these, and therefore it could just be used in place of the others everytime. But it is not. Is it because か is quite "weak", so the others are used because they are more interrogative and "stronger" meaning you definitely want an answer. だい or かい could get replaced with か legit, but usually it won't replace の completely and instead it would become のか right?
Q4. According to myself な adjectives need to use なの for interrogation. But I'm sure I have heard stuff like "おいしいなの..." and that isn't a な adjective. Is this a different kind of なの? Like the "but" なの? E.g "A:すしが食べたくない。 B:なぜ? A:すしがきらいのだ。B:何?おいしいなの。。。" type thing. (also なのよ and なのだよ etc)
I've just realized that they are legitimately combined using the rules above that I stated. Which is quite helpful...
Interrogative + adjective words or verbs in a sentence = だい and の e.g. "誰が美しいのだい?" or 彼女はいつが来るのだい。(いつ could be put anywhere before verb and without が yes...?)
No interrogative + adjective words in a sentence = かい and の e.g. "それは新しいのかい?" or "あなたは、そんなことをしたのかい?"
These are things all things that I have "known" (apart from Q1 & 2) but haven't really given much thought because sometimes you can sort of tell when a sentence "sounds" or "feels" right, so you don't question it. Writing all this down from my head and the net made me realize this. Of course everything I think could also be wrong. Which is why I hope someone could confirm my knowledge and everything I've wrote, as well as answer my questions.
It's quite a small thing that I am thinking a lot about. I wonder if this is necessary.
