Interracial Couples

Hum...somehow when I go to Kowloon, some people can tell right away I'm not native, although I have no accent when I speak, and I wear ordinary clothes.
And whenever I'm in France or the United Kingdom, people just think of me as an asian just because I'm not fond of going to clubs'n pubs everynight -_-
But still, the point is that I see the term whitewashed a lot when people talk about me and don't think of it as a negative one...

'White' men in places like Thailand and the lesser developed Asian countries are perceived by the locals as being richer (due to the better overall standard of living abroad) and more powerful (due to perceived higher social status and nationality), so being attractive. Thus, parents may urge their daughters to find a 'foreigner' so that they can have a 'better life' and higher standard of living abroad - or so they think and idealize.

I thought in most Asian countries it's like this, I mean most first world nations are Western Nations. You know some Japanese and Taiwanese girls are very easy with Western guys not just Thai girls, but Thailand is full of prostitutes that's seems to be true.

In the developed Asian countries like Japan and in places like Taiwan, this philosophy can still be slightly relevant, although this would occur much less and is more apparent in poorer families there. Then it would come down to subjective preference in appearance (Western looks) and novelty (dating a difference race).

I see, but I must tell you in Western people's eyes only Japan has reached first world status and Taiwan even Singapore to Westerners are not considered "really developed" even their GDPs have reached a standard that are considered that, by the text book. This is mainly due to some other reasons that Westerners don't consider they qualified as developed nations.

My marriage to my husband has nothing to do with the fact he is richer than the Chinese on average. In fact the Chinese people in my network in Australia are very wealthy.

In places like the US, UK and Australia, as 'white' is mainstream in such countries, ethnic minorities will often attempt to assimilate to the society by opting to meld in with the 'mainstream' color there by choosing a local there - in order to eliminate the distance. It could often be 'whitewashing' (as you put mention) for those ethnic minorities born abroad - i.e. having total neglect of one's original heritage and culture being replaced by the culture, tastes and preferences in the place of residence.

Hmmm, actually my husband is not Australian, he is of European descendents but not Australian and his first language is not English. At the moment we are not living in Australia but in the future there is a high chance we will. So I don't really benefit to assimilate to the Australian society, rather we would both be immigrants. But at the moment because of my marriage to him I am experiencing his cultures easier I suppose.

Personally, I would not really prefer dating someone with a very different ethnicity from my own. I've had experience and I hated the differences; it's almost as if we were always speaking a different language due to the cultural differences (despite being linguistically identical). It was refreshing at first during the first two years, but it soon became tiresome and despite numerous attempts to solve issues pertaining to culture, it was irreconcilable as culture is ingrained. But, nonetheless, some people may have a much better experience or prefer a different lifestyle for personal reasons.

I suppose everybody has right to decide how they want to live their lives. As interracial couple, there are circumstances where we confuse each other or there are certain things we don't always agree on. But we choose to stay together.😍

BTW, Minty, have read my reply to your query about wedding photo shops in Hong Kong?

Yes, sorry I read it just now; I didn't read it earlier because I was caught up with other discussions. Yes, thank you for your advice; the next time when I have the opportunity to go to HK, I will look at the website you suggested. Or if I have any more queries I suppose I can ask you right?:p

That was extremely rude, im sure in the west you could complain to someone about this to get appropriate action taken against the offending studio staff.

Your response is similar to most Western people's idea what they think of this situation. My husband thinks they were unprofessional and expensive.😌

Hey, I don't disagree with the term being racist; I was simply acknowledging Minty's mention of 'whitewashing'. The term is a crude manipulation of the meaning of the word, 'whitewash'.

I don't think you are racist.

'Whitewashed' is often a very negative, derogatory term for those ethnic minorities who, after living in Western countries for a long time or since birth, are identical to the locals internally in mind and spirit (as opposed to external appearance) - this carries culture, habits, language accent, tastes, preferences and so on. In this sense, they perceive of themselves as being 'white' despite their appearance and prefer everything 'white' over those of his/her own ethnic origin. These people are said to be discriminatory towards people of their own ethnicity (because of preferring things, people, objects that are 'white'), thus being 'whitewashed'. Normally, these people are also said to have 'lost touch' with their original heritage.

Additionally, some people use 'whitewashed' merely for those who are obsequious to Westerners (i.e. 崇洋媚外).

Yes I do think white washed is of negative connotation. It's like labelling East Asians as "bananas", inside white outside yellow.

The thing is although I have been labelled "White Trash" but I don't exactly prefer all things White over Asian.

I do in fact able to speak my original language, Mandarin rather well. My Chinese reading is also good but my Chinese writing is not so good but that's because I only have primary school education in Chinese. So I am not one of those Asians who are unaware of their own cultures or language/s. I think some people (not necessarily Asians) have issues with people intermarry people outside of their race hence the disapproval reactions.:auch:

In terms of discrimination towards my own race for spouse selecting, I don't think I am exactly that but I do think a lot of Chinese like to remain conservative and I am fairly cosmopolitan and I like to try new things. 🌹

Funny that since were all humans, as i stated with the white african example, culture and nationality is simply a case of origin and stuff, but i wouldnt call western culture white, many westerners would claim we no longer have a culture of our own (white folk), because in a modern nation where many different peoples live and where all cultures come and mix and stuff, any real native culture is dilute at best.
Were all human beings, just with slight variations in skin colour all the way through to black and back again to white.

You cant prescribe culture to a specific ethnic group, if that was the case america could never exist as it does now, and no immigrants could live within western society, the fact western society is now a diluted mixed up pot of tasty mixed veg soup is proof that isnt the case.

no matter what cultural background you have, you need a compromise about the toilet lid war with your partner. be happy.

Hi,

I Googled and found an interesting article: "International Marriages in Japan: Part Four – Basic Data on International Marriage in 2002" by J. Sean Curtin (Professor, Japanese Red Cross University).

link:

GLOCOM Platform - Special Topics - Social Trends

One quote from the article:

"The international marriage trend has been particularly strong in the major urban areas. In 2000, 1 in 10 marriages in the Tokyo area were between a Japanese spouse and a foreigner and in Osaka the figure was 1 in 12.
In about 80% of these marriages, the husband was Japanese. Chinese women are currently the most popular foreign brides, followed by Filipinas, South Koreans and North Koreans. In marriages involving foreign grooms, Koreans were the number one choice, followed by Americans".

It would seem like many more Japanese men are actually finding forign wifes than the other way around. We simply do not notice the Chinese, Filipino and Korean because they do not stand out as much in the croud as say white foriegn husbands.

She's got eyes and hands, she can put the toilet seat down herself the little nag. :p

Seriously, do dudes complain when she leaves it down?.

No, we just put the seat up and get on with our lives.

Off-topic though. 😊

it should have been "seat", not lid for more universal dsicussion. thanks anyways.

Dreamer, women have an irrational hatred of toilet seats left up, it drives them bongo's, like when a bull sees red.

Apparently she is totaly incapable of taking the half a second to lower it herself without totaly flipping out at how apparently its a sin against human rights for a toilet seat to be in the up position.

Hmmm, Chinese and Korean truly don't stand out because these two ethnic groups are also East Asians. However I think Pilipino will stand out; South East Asians do not have the similar appearances to East Asians. Unless she is Chinese Pilipino since in South East Asia there are many Chinese immigrants. Like me for example, I am born in Malaysia, before I become Australian I was Malaysian. But my ethnicity is Chinese not Malay, and Chinese is East Asian while Malay is South East Asian and we don't look alike.

errr...what's the matter with the toilet seat ? oO?
Well this is something only married couples or couples who live together take notice of. 😊

I actually prefer the toilet seat to be left up. I make it a habit to lift the toilet seat up after I gone to the toilet. This is convenient for the next user my husband. :p

☝ you ma'am, are a goddess!!!!.....sooo...have you ever thought fo leaving your husband for a younger man?? 🙂

(I'm joking by the way *i say this because kin has made me relise folk dont always get a joke*).

My toilet looked like someone threw a gernade in a chocolate factory. I actually unbolted it, and took it outside so I could spray it off with the hose but it looks about the same way again... sigh I dont like cleaning the toilet.

Anyway on the topic of interracial couples, some work, some dont, but thats true with all marriages.

What did I say?!?!?! :o (or is this supposed to be the joke...? ) Normally I am the person seeing a joke where actually none is intended... 😌

*coughcough* on topic...
Those are some interesting infos, Han Chan. :p Especially to see how a perception can differ from the statistics, because of a person's ethnic origin/nationality not being obvious from their outward appearance. There seems to be a lot of awareness of Japanese girls marrying western guys (European or American) without the thoughts given to Japanese guys marrying non-Japanese (but still Asian) girls.

Anyway, there are always difficulties in relationships of people from different cultural backgrounds, but with maturity and understanding these don't have to matter in a loving relationship; sometimes they could be source of division, other times source of interest, it depends on circumstances and the individuals involved.

It's also interesting about the idea of 'white' or 'western' as 'a culture'; it had never occurred to me before that often it is talked about like that, whereas in fact there are many distinct cultures, such as those of different European countries, and of course the States. For example, the one time I have been to the States, I felt very 'foreign', I really did feel the sensation of being in a different culture. People's body language, manner of approach to me and tones of voice were totally different from what I was used to; it took me longer to 'read' people in order to interact with them; I had the feeling of being wary, of 'looking and listening' in order to gauge how to interact with people before approaching them. I even had trouble understanding people's speech! And yet the States are grouped in with Europe when talking of 'the west' in contrast to Japan.

Errr...Mind telling us more? (Or by Pm if you want)
Because I absolutely don't understand a single thing about this matter...

I'm going to stick my nose in this thread for a moment, I'm all for interracial dating, but I was wondering. Is it possible that in these cultures where interracial dating is becoming somewhat common, could it be more of a fad? Especially within Japanese culture? Because sometimes I feel the reason why people date outside of their race is because it's some sort of fad. Or the people are just simply curious. :?

I'm dating an asian guy and the only problem we've ran into was his parents and they don't agree with it just by the fact that i'm white. They think he shouldn't date out of his race...

Anyways, I don't see anything wrong with interracial relationships if you love the person for who they are then their race shouldn't matter to you.

My parents were an interracial couple before it was even legal to marry in California. Like wise were my in-laws.

My kids are White-Japanese-Creole-Mexican.

Anyone they date will be... a different "race", but equally human.

My mom is caucasian and my dad is full Japanese. My Dad's parents hated the idea of having a white person in the family. The funny thing is, is that my dad and his siblings all married different races. Well, caucasian and Italian.

You can tell that my Grandma is still hating the idea. She dislikes my mom. My mom doesn't care though. lol
But my dad said that he has never been interested in his own race.

I don't know about Japan, but I think the reason why it becomes more common in the UK, is just because there are increasing numbers of non-British people living here. So there is more likelihood of meeting someone you like/love, from a different race.

With some people it can be a fad or curiosity thing, it's true, but I reckon once the novelty wears off their lesson will be learned...

Theres nothing to understand, by its very nature its irrational. 👍

You will learn that alot of adults head-butting and relationship friction is irrational and illogical. 😊

Well...if I ever was to date a non asian girl I dunno how my parents would react but I'm sure they'd be really unsatisfied...
