This is a portrait I picked up recently. The composition is a bit different than I normally see with soldiers portraits. I probably mentioned it before but a huge number of vintage photos haven't the least bit of identification or caption. It's frustrating.

But not is this portrait unusual but it is captioned both back and front. If one of the forum members has the time a translation would be so appreciated.

As always, my sincere thanks for your help.

They both seem to be quotations from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Go to sleep!! for our homeland
This is Porthos's only principle.

"Sinfulness, thy name is Romeo."
Murakami, be good Romeo for Juliet.
I'm Porthos, Porthos who follows illusional love.
Is this exactly a comedy in this world?

ボルトス is a typical typo of ポルトス Porthos in The d'Artagnan Romances by Alexandre Dumas.

**
This is a variation of 弱き者よ、汝の名は女なり Frailty, thy name is woman. from Hamlet by Shakespeare.

A very interesting man, Toritoribe. Really - not at all what I expected...

I'm going to root out a WWII Japanese forum and see if anyone can decipher the ' 30 ' unit number.

Toritoribe, a simple digging around on the net I found that the ' collar flash ' or metal type number insignia was discontinued in 1938. However, some members of the military still used it until late in the war.
