I'm not exactly sure if this is why, but 'shi'（し） also means death（死） as well as 4. I know it may sound weird, but I've read that some people have learned to use 'yon' from the Chinese counting system to avoid confusion with death.

(Imagine what it would be like if someone was glancing over something written, or overhead a conversation and they saw (or heard) the word 「じゅうし」 (14) "juu shi" and thought the person meant 'ten deaths'.)

I've also read that this is why 「なな」（七） "nana" is used instead of 「しち」 "shichi" 「死地」 (proper way to die) for the number seven.
Correct me if I am wrong. ☝

I think this is were context comes into play. You'd have to be slightly morbid to assume 「じゅうし」meant ten deaths (instead of fourteen...the number) in a conversation about how many books,classes, cats, siblings,etc one has. =/

My auntie told me a similar thing about "shi" also meaning death, but made it seem like "yon" was used more because it's kind of bad luck to use a word that sounds like another word that also means death.

I could be (and probably am) wrong.

旅館の夕食は、ホタテやアワビ、海老に鯛・・・・海鮮尽くしで したよ。
これで1泊1万円以下だったから、超お得でした。
海辺にある公衆浴場 波の湯 「茜」から見る夕日はとっても綺麗でしたよ。
