Ok here goes....

I am going to Japan to visit my future in-laws. That alone has me shaking in my boots, but they have already said that they are very happy to have me in their family. What has me truly on edge is meeting my fiances boss and co-workers. I want so much to make a good impression. His boss is picking us up from the airport, I don't know but should I bring him something that I can give right after we meet at the airport or hotel that night? Next, I was informed that they are giving me a "Welcome to Japan" party at a vegetarian restaurant and the whole company is invited. Oh my gosh, I feel like I am going to be on display. Do I need to do anything special or is there something I can say, besides thank-you...I am just so completely overwhelmed. They are so excited to meet me, I just don't want to disappoint anyone or make any mistakes. I was told that it is a very special party for them and there could be another suprise...ahhh the pressure to be perfect is driving me crazy!!! I feel like I have to pass the parents test and the employer test. Any advice here would be so helpful. Thanks in advance.

You've already given the wisest answer you could possibly get, right in your own signature.

Totally agree with Mike there!

Within reason, you can't do anything wrong. Just be polite, have a couple drinks with the boss to loosen up (if you do drink), and enjoy yourself. If you want to impress anyone, use whatever Japanese you know (that's appropriate for the situation

Opps...I should have taken my own advice. Smiles do work.

Yes, I do drink. I was told to expect drinks to be flowing freely at out party. I am sure it will be fun. I guess that it's just hard because they don't speak English and I don't speak Japanese. I am so tickled though that everyone is excited to meet me and that they want to make a good impression for me as well. That says a lot to me, that people who don't even know me are going to so much trouble for me. I want them to know how much I appreciate all that they are doing.

You will be fine, Goldiegirl! Although, I know exactly how anxious you can get about meeting new people in a country you've never been before. Make sure that your fiance takes a good care of you while you guys are in Japan!

I think a small gift for his boss for picking you up might be a good idea. Your fiance should be able to give you advice on that.

I hope it goes well. Don't forget to tell us how it went!

Thanks misa.j somehow I just have to let go and let life happen. It's funny, I have been having these crazy dreams about Japan, and they all end up with me getting lost and not being able to get back to my hotel. My anxiety is getting the better of me even in sleep. I feel lucky to be taking this trip and want to enjoy every minute. I will definitley let everyone know how it goes. We are going to make a movie of our trip so maybe I can get it on the internet for every one to see...10 days and counting....

Once you and the whole group starts the party after your communal group onsen bath, you'll be relaxed and settled down. Piece of cake!

LOL I am sure I am not ready for onsen...private maybe...communal...not a chance.

Giving an impression to be good for a stranger in Japan
It is a right "OJIGI".

What would be the right "OJIGI". I know it is a bow, to be polite or show respect and for greeting people to as well.
