How to prepare Japanese-style teriyaki

I have tried to cook this for my girlfriend a few times, but it is bad ^^; Especially when I use the thin, watery kind of teriyaki. I find the thick one for glazing to be much better and not as bitter. (BTW, all Japanese sauce product I use is KIKKOMAN).

Do you have any tips?
 
The main ingredients for the sauce will be:
Soy sauce
Sugar or mirin if you have
Sake
