How to learn Japanese without a Teacher?

Hi,
I started learning Japanese a week ago I went to a VHS course (VHS=Volkshochschule=sort of a evening school),but our teacher fell ill after the second lessen and because there is no substitute for him the course has been cancelled....
What could I do I deperatly want to learn Japanese but how I live in a really rural town and there are no japanese people living here so I'll have to learn it by myself.What would be the best way?

Depending on the cash you have, a good book, workbook (with extra homework exercises in it) and an audio cd is a must.

Self-paced studying is also important. Dont try and skip ahead because you REALLY want to learn "-te" form of verbs before you've learned how to use adjectives. Follow the book exactly and you should be fine.

Did your teacher have you folks buy a textbook?

try to get a study partner.
Failing that, there are tons of online resources (I link to the cream of the crop from my blog if you need a place to look).
