How much money should be enough...

Hi all, I dunno whether this question has been asked a lot of times over here but I've been wondering how much money is enough for a 5 week holiday in Tokyo.

I'm thinking of taking ﾂ≫??500 (519,299 yen/ 4,932 USDs) but I dunno whether it should be enough. I'll be coming with a friend of mine and he's taking a similar amount with him. We'll be staying at a hostel and probably live on noodles and McDonalds.

We plan to do what pretty much any turist would do but also go clubbing...

Do you reckon ﾂ≫??500 should be enough for 5 weeks?

If you are not planing on buying too much stuff, that should be more than enough. My friend's told me that an average hotel room costs around 80-100$/night and I am sure that you can find much cheaper youth hostels. As for food, you can find things starting from 500yen so there should be no problem.

As for a place to stay, I recommend gaijin houses, they are way cheaper than hotels. The biggest problem with them is, that you need to stay there longer as well. But they should be about 100 000 yen for a month inside Tokyo, or if you can sleep in the same room, you usually have to pay some extra, but it is still cheaper than renting two rooms instead.

Money wise, that should be more than enough. The daily use of money should be somewhere around 1000 to 2000 yen, or more depending how expensive you want to eat. The gaijin houses also have a kitchen that you can use, so you could save money by cooking yourself.

I myself, recommend you to stay away from McDonalds and other non-Japanese fast food chains, as they are rather expensive in Japan. A bowl of ramen usually costs around 500 to 1000 yen and is very taste and the bowl is usually big.

When I finally get the chance to go to a holiday in tokyo, I definitely plan on slurping ramen like everyday

If you are planing to shop a lot as well, it is far from being overestimated. It just depends how you want to spend your money, carefully, shopping or live a nice life. Each of them has its advantages, you know.

Besides, it is way better to have some extra cash in case something happens and you are in need of the money. Nothing is worse than to be in a country without money and no means of getting any money.

Yeah I guess you're right. I'm not much of a shopper but I do like eating .

Chr0nik, I would compare to the UK because as far as I can tell, Japan is around the same rediculous pricing for most things. If you think you could live on circa £75 a day in the UK on holiday including travel, accommodation and food then you have enough. Personally, I would take about 3-3.5k for 5 weeks and make sure you have access to either a credit card of your own or someone else's (just in case)...

Yeah, when I was in Japan one of the German exchange students used over 50 000 yen each month for just food, even though he was fed by his host family.

Japan is a nice place to go shopping though, I am not a shopper neither but when I came back my luggage had tripled.
