How do you know... ON/KUN and beyond

Oh I see! One hiragana and tense mistake as always.

The woman behind じゅん → 電話する
I translated this to "There is a woman behind Jun using a telephone."
じゅんさんの後ろに電話している女の人がいます。

(Just to let you know, originally I dd not put the ga there, I just pasted it in).

Seeing as I probably got that wrong, "The woman using a telephone is behind Jun."
電話している女の人はじゅんさんの後ろにいます。

The girl infront of えり → 手紙を書く
The girl writing a letter is sitting in front of えり.
手紙を書いている女の子はえりさんの前にいます。

The man behind ちかこ → 音楽を聴く
The man listening to music is standing behind ちかこ.
音楽を聴いている男の人は千佳子さんの後ろにいます。

The girl sitting in front of えり is writing a letter.
The man standing behind ちかこ is listening to music.

Are these the same as what I have written?
Also, would you like to give me a few mada examples for me to work out?

Also, I really suck at listening comprehension. I'm going to try to work on it but there's nothing I can really do unless I talk with Japanese people...

the man behind ちかこ
the man standing behind ちかこ
the man listening to music

the girl in front of えり

the girl writing a letter

Do you think these are all the same expressions?;-)

Also, would you like to give me a few mada examples for me to work out?
When I arrived at the station, the train wasn't there yet. (use the verb 来る for train)

Have you ever eaten sushi?
No, I haven't (eaten it) yet.
(This might be a bit advanced, the expression for "experience.")

Also, I really suck at listening comprehension. I'm going to try to work on it but there's nothing I can really do unless I talk with Japanese people...
How about this?

Do you think these are all the same expressions?

They are not! I guess I'll get to work on these. Hopefully they'll be correct!

there is _ next to ~
I chose to make it, there is a person smoking tobacco next to Eri.
たばこを吸っている人がえりさんのとなりにいます。

_ is standing behind ~
The woman using a telephone is standing behind Jun.
電話をかけている女の人はじゅんさんの前です。
Now for this one, I used は and I did not put de as a location marker. I consulted my textbook for this one, all the way back to Chapter 4! I think this is correct.

_ is sitting in front of ~
The person listening to music is in front of Chikako.
音楽を聞いている人の前にはちかこさんです。(ni means imasu, I think, but I wasn't sure if this is the right structure at all!)

_ is listening to music
The person behind Chikako is listening to music.
ちかこさんの後ろに音楽を聞いている人がいます。 (instead of ni, I could have used de, right? and then I'd just put ha desu at the end?)

_ is writing a letter
手紙を書いて女の人はじゅんさんとちかこさんの間です。

I'm respectfully skipping the other ones until I know I've gotten these right. It also seems I wrote some things at the top, are those structures and grammarisms correct too?

When I arrived at the station, the train wasn't there yet. (use the verb 来る for train)

Have you ever eaten sushi?
No, I haven't (eaten it) yet.

I don't know the word for arrive, unfortunately. I changed the sentence to, "I waited at the station, the train wasn't there yet."
I also literally translated it to say I haven't eaten it yet.

駅で待った、まだ電車は来ていません。

もうすしをたべました?
いいえ、まだそれをたべていません。

I double checked these when typing and sending so they should be good...if not, I fail!

I also finished Chapter 10 completely, I have to review the chapter's end, but would you like to see the stuff that I did for it?

Uh, the key point of this practice is "qualifying nouns with adjectival clauses/phrases," isn't it?;-)

There is a person smoking tobacco next to Eri.
たばこを吸っているがえりさんのとなりにいます。

This is completely correct. So, how about the following one?

The person behind Chikako is listening to music.
ちかこさんの後ろに音楽を聞いているがいます。

Also,
to stand: 立つ
to sit: 座る

I don't know the word for arrive, unfortunately.

まだ電車は来ていません
tense of "wasn't there"

It was, I'm not still 100% on that...and I'm still not sure if I did everything correctly! I also got the two examples wrong? Damn...

Also, WWWJDIC is very confusing for me to browse.

駅に着いた、まだ電車は来ていませんでした.

I also had other questions and if you could make sure everything I did until now is correct I would appreciate it! I need to make sure I have a good foundation. I'm almost done reviewing Chapter 10, do you mind seeing my work for Chapter 10 so far?

Just one niggling little thing. Do you know the ~tara conditional yet? This might be a bit more advanced but attaching the ら to the plain perfect verb turns into a "when" or an "if" statement. This is a little complicated if you have not encountered this form in your textbook yet.

駅に着いたら電車はまだ来ていません。
When I arrived at the station, the train had not come yet

Dont worry if you hadnt seen this form yet 👍

I have actually not seen the tara verb, we just finished tsumori in the textbook as well as naru. I'm excited to show you the stuff I did but I want to make sure all my 9 stuff is good!

The man smoking tobacco is sitting next to Eri.
たばこを吸っている男の人えりさんのとなりに座っています

So, how about this?
The girl sitting in front of Eri is writing a letter.
The man listening to music is standing behind Chikako who is eating donuts.

駅に着いた、まだ電車は来ていませんでした.
You can also say 駅に着いたとき、まだ電車は来ていませんでした.

I'm almost done reviewing Chapter 10, do you mind seeing my work for Chapter 10 so far?
Sure!🙂:

The girl sitting in front of Eri is writing a letter.

The man listening to music is standing behind Chikako who is eating donuts.
This one was more complicated. Not sure if I did it right.

Pretty sure I got that right!

The girl [sitting in front of Eri] is writing a letter.

The man

Again, [ ] part is modifying its preceeding noun.

So the core of this sentence is

Shoot, I forgot to put the iru in the first one, yes, I get it!

As for the second one, 音楽を聴いている男の人はドーナツを食べているちかこさんの後ろに立っています certainly makes more sense than my second one. I get each part, as well. I also missed a good half of the sentence. :\ Thanks undrentide! Rep for you when I can give some. I am also reviewing the newest stuff I posted.

Assuming I get a good portion of 10 right, I have also finished Chapter 11. I am going to review it before starting the excersizes, it was not very difficult, just less easy to pile on.

I have grown fond of stuyding the Japanese language.

Why is it in the past tense if it's becoming? I can understand if it was narimasu, no problem, but narimashita doesn't go good in my head.

ツ〜窶堋ス is usually explained as "past tense" but strictly speaking, Japanese language does not really have tense such as past, present and future. I think there're only two, completed and not completed. (Of course we do no have the concept of past/present/future and past is one of the forms of completion.)

窶愿コ窶怒ナ津ェ窶堙娯?「テ冷?ケツュ窶堋ェナ?y窶堋オ窶堋ュ窶堙遺?堙ィ窶堙懌?堋オ窶堋スツ。 can be also written as Studying the Japanese language has grown a fun.
窶堙遺?堙ゥ means change here (same as "become") and if this change has not happened yet, studying Japanese is not fun yet, maybe it still is a torture.
Studying Japanese was like a torture, but for some reasons it changed to something better, and after this change it is fun.

What do you mean with 窶ーツスナスナセ?
If it meant 窶ーツスナスナセツ(窶堋「窶堙 = when), then normally it is written in hiragana, presumably to avoid the confusion of 窶ーツスナスナセツ(窶堙遺?堙ア窶堋カ = what timeツ).
If you meant the duration then you have to add ナ?テ? 窶ーツスナスナセナ?テ板(窶堙遺?堙ア窶堋カ窶堋ゥ窶堙ア = how many hours)

Is it 窶堋キ窶堙ゥ or 窶堋オ窶堋ス, the person asking doesn't know that I was doing it until now. I would have also put 窶堋オ窶堙??堋「窶堙懌?堋キツ。

This question of yours confused me...
I think when one use a interrogative (when, where, who, what, why, how), it is the point of question. If the person is asking when/how long did you study Japanese, then he should know you did study Japanese. If he does not, then his first question should be "WHAT did you do (or WHAT were you doing)?". Then after you answer you were studying Japanese, he might ask "when" or "how long". Right?

And if you answer about the future (what you're going to do) or your daily habit (what you usually do), you use 窶堋キ窶堙ゥ and if you're answering what you've alreayd done, then it is 窶堋オ窶堋ス.

Hmm, it seems I missed hiragana particle in the beginning. Dang, I thought I truly proofread it!

では

Why do you use de wa? I'm glad to see that the shortening of the sentence were good. As for some of the rest of the corrections I did get them before you posted! But your attention to it is amazing, thank you.

But when comparing something, は sounds more natural because は is used to make contrast.
Hmm, I'll keep this in mind. I remember reading it was ga, is this not a contrast as well?

Thanks for thinking I got the ___no down. :) I did miss the を particle a bit, I didn't know you also had to include it. Do you also include it for all other particles?

いつ日本語を勉強した?

何時間日本語を勉強した?

十時から今(六時)まで勉強する。
I study Japanese from 10:00 until 18:00 (or 6:00?).

Sorry but I do not see cleary what you tried to say.
What do you mean with 何時?
If it meant 何時(いつ = when), then normally it is written in hiragana, presumably to avoid the confusion of 何時(なんじ = what time).
If you meant the duration then you have to add 間. 何時間(なんじかん = how many hours)

My situation was someone walked into a room, saw me studying, and asked how long I studied for. I'd normally answer, either ____ hours, or "from x to x". Most likely, I wanted to ask いつ, the first question. I see what you mean about the nanjikan. That's another answer I'd give, in which case I guess I'd say hachijikan.

This question of yours confused me...
Basically, I had to stop to answer the question, right? So I was thinking, maybe I need to have it in the past tense. But, as usual, a single sentence clears up my jibber-jabbering:
And if you answer about the future (what you're going to do) or your daily habit (what you usually do), you use する and if you're answering what you've alreayd done, then it is した.

Can you give me one last question like the "The man listening to music is standing behind Chikako who is eating donuts."? I want to take a shot at it. Or two, one simple and one hard?
Definitely rep for you when I get the chance to :)

Pharmaceutical Calculations, Japanese book Genki :) I translated Pharmaceutical Calculations literally, I would have done the same for Anatomy (taigaku) but my Japanese teacher said taiiku is more appropriate.

And made, mada, what is the difference? One used in response to mou, the other one a response to kara?

And awesome, I got it down! Now if only I could say it, haha.

Pharmaceutical Calculations: 窶禿イナ?wナ致ナスZ
Anatomy: 窶ーテー窶填ナ?w
(窶佚戸?ァ generally means "gymnastics" as a subject.)

Ah, so I was kind of right with the response to ___. Just put them in reverse.

And hmm, yakugakuteisan is Pharmaceutical Calcs. I can see why tei (measurement) would be in there...kaibogaku is Anatomy as well, interesting, thank you. I got really lazy last night, I didn't do anything of what I said except Kanji review, haha. It's getting harder, the more I learn the more I forget :|

Just, just a tiny thing
薬学計算; yakugakukeisan

You wrote "tei" twice, so probably it's not a simple typo?;-)

Probably wasn't, I was thinking of tokee (watch) and somehow messed it up as usual! Am doing Chapter 11, it's not too difficult.

---

So I did Chapter 11, it wasn't as hard as the concepts from 8 and 9. Though, I should say, the hardest thing I've ever seen in Japanese thus far is this sentence:
untitled82-1.webp
. It's really hard to understand for me, three particles right next to each other...I understand the ni + kai/ai, wa meaning the subject, and mou being already, but it's very...hard!

Other than that, can you grade my review?

You did it quite well!!👍

the hardest thing I've ever seen in Japanese thus far is this sentence:
untitled82-1.webp
. It's really hard to understand for me, three particles right next to each other...I understand the ni + kai/ai, wa meaning the subject, and mou being already, but it's very...hard!
もう is not a particle but an adverb.;-)
The core of the sentence is あの人に会いたくありません "I don't want to see that person."
は makes the object あの人 the topic.
もう in the structure "もう~たくない" means "not to want to do something again/anymore."
Thus, あの人にはもう会いたくありません means "As for that person, I don't want to see him/her anymore."

1. はい、湖に行きたい。
2. はい、日本語のテープを聞きたい。
3. はい、旅行をしたい。
4. いいえ、ゆっくり休みたくない。
5. いいえ、会社の社長になりたくない。
6. はい、日本で働きたい。
7. はい、車を買いたい。
8. いいえ、日本に住みたくない。
9. はい、留学したい。
10. いいえ、山に登りたくない。
11. はい、有名になりたい。
Perfect! 👍
But はい/いいえ is a polite form, so, e.g., はい、湖に行きたいです sounds more natural.

1. はい、テレビがみたかった。
2. はい、飛行機に乗りたかった。
3. いいえ、お風呂に入りたくなかった。
4. はい、犬が飼いたい。

7. いいえ、男の子と女の子と話したくありませんでした。
8. いいえ、ピアノが習いたくなかった。
Another: はい、有名になりたい。
4. はい、犬が/を飼いたかったです
5. いいえ、学校やめたくなかったです。
7. いいえ、男の子/女の子と話したくありませんでした。
("both boys and girls": 男の子女の子と/男の子とも女の子とも)
Another: はい、有名になりたかったです

You can use both が and を with some verbs(見る, 飼う, 食べる, 習う in those examples), but を is more commonly used in some cases. が emphasizes the object as same as the contrastive marker は.

テレビが見たかった(ん)です。
It was TV, I wanted to watch.

I changed it to read a book: たけしさんは本を読んだり、運転したりしました。
きょうこさんはお菓子を使ったり、うちで本を読んだりしました。

山下先生は温泉に行ったり、休んだりしました。
to go camping: キャンプに行く
きょうこさんはお菓子をったり、うちで本を読んだりしました。
スーさんは大阪に遊びに行ったり、食べに行ったりしました。(notice to the difference between "went to eat" and "ate")

ジオンさんは:

to write love letter: ラブレターを書く

Now, you can translate my previous example, can't you?;-)
Have you ever eaten sushi?
No, I haven't (eaten it) yet.
(This might be a bit advanced, the expression for "experience.")

There are no real examples with this so I made some up myself.

The woman wearing glasses standing near the girl eating cookies
クッキーを食べている女の子の近くに立っている、眼鏡をかけた/かけている女の人
This is a bit complicated.;-)

週末には、映画を見たり、買い物したりました。
明日、洗濯したり、勉強したります。
昨日、友達に会ったり本を読んだりしました。
*LL(語学教室)で日本語を練習したり、日本語のテープを聞いたります。
今度の週末には、山に登ったり、温泉に行ったりたい。
教室煙草を吸ったり、ビールを飲んだりしてはいけません。

*日本語を練習したり、LLで日本語のテープを聞いたり means "I practice Japanese" and "listen to Japanese tapes in the LL". Thus, in that sentence, LLで modifies only 日本語のテープを聞く, and the place where to practice Japanese isn't stated.

You can use both が and を with some verbs(見る, 飼う, 食べる, 習う in those examples), but を is more commonly used in some cases. が emphasizes the object as same as the contrastive marker は.

I see, I should leave it at を haha. Once again I see I have tense issues to work out.

But はい/いいえ is a polite form, so, e.g., はい、湖に行きたいです sounds more natural.
True, I just hate this un / uun in both writing and sound. Weird for me.

スーさんは大阪に遊びに行ったり、食べたりしました。
スーさんは大阪に遊びに行ったり、食べに行ったりしました。(notice to the difference between "went to eat" and "ate")

I see it, I also didn't read that part of the sentence. Thanks!

Now, you can translate my previous example, can't you?
I actually still can't find it. I'm also not sure why I put shimashita for every single one instead of shimasu. Weird.

Was it the camping?

たけしさんはキャンプに行ったり、運転したりしました。

クッキーを食べている女の子の近くに立っている、眼鏡をかけた/かけている女の人

This sentence makes sense to me when I read it but something is off, just like that one from a few pages ago about the number of people. I think because of the blue part: Nothing was introduced until the end so maybe this is why. Can you give me a Japanese sentence to translate and/or an English one to translate?

I'm also not sure why I repeated my first mistake and missed every shi in the last one. Very weird. I'm glad I got the last two mostly right, I was very unsure on how to phrase them.

第12課のほうがとても難しい.

I'm also looking for a Dictionary. The one I have right now is good, but unfortunately the entries are also romanized: I'm looking at "absorb" right now, they have the Kanji after such, but then no hiragana, instead romaji to spell out the Kanji, if you know what I mean. Do you know any good ones? I was looking at this one, I have the Random Houses' dictionary, I'll try to use it but the romaji turns me way off so I want a good one.

Also, um...I took a practice JLPT3 test. Did not do well. By that, I mean, did not pass. This is very disappointing to me...
