How did you protect your computer from virus and spyware??

Hi everyone.
How did you protect your computer from virus and spyware??
I'm using NOD32 anti-virus , I turned ON my firewall and install Spybot for spyware.
How about you?

hmm used to have norton internet security.. really liked the mailspam protector and the AD-blocker but then the said it took alot of ram en cpu from your system..
so now I have more crappy stuff Like Avast virus and Zonealarm firewall, still need to change that sometime.
I always used both ad-aware and spybot for antispam

that's correct, I also installed norton internet security before and I noticed that it took a lot of ram.

I just don't go to sketchy sites and I manually disconnect my connection when I notice something strange happening. I regularly go through system checks of cookies, temp files processes and applications. I clean my computer on a regular basis and well... I just really don't trust the net.

Avast on my Windows computer and ipcop on my router machine.
On linux computers I set up my the ip-tables to only allow the kind of traffic I require and drop the rest.

That and keep away from the "sketchy sites". Haven't had any problems.

Use Firefox, and stay away from certain sites.

Also, own your own computer. I used to get viruses all the time when I had to use a shared computer. Now I hardly get any.

I'm on Vista and IE. I only use Windows firewall. No viruses or spyware even after 5 month of usage. The best defence is still basic common sense. Don't click on ads, don't open unknown e-mail attachments and avoid certain sites.

I use Norton on my PC and McAffee on my laptop as it came with a three year subscription, and I have never had any viruses, worms, trojan horses, etc. in over 10 years as both systems caught them immediately. They key is to have automatic updates on so that you can always be up to date and to dao an automatic scan once a week of your entire system. Well worth the money.

Interesting note is that with Norton, it allows to see where in the world the hacker who tried to get into your computer was located and it is more than 80% in China, and second in Russia with the remainder being in the US and Europe.

I have moved from Windows to Linux a while ago (for various reasons). And find it comforting, that the distribution takes care of itself in terms of security- and other updates, not only for the OS, but for all the included software as well. So the whole of my pc is always kept in good shape, without me having to scour the internet for security bulletins and updates of everything on a regular basis.

Sure, shields are up and weapons of malware destruction are ready to go at all times. But then again: The higher level of peace of mind and lower level of paranoia was IMHO worth the move.

1. Use firewall, which work in the 'learn' mode - to blocked bad exe-files going to the net.
2. Use Opera (no bagging IE!). Firefox ok, but i prefer Opera
3. User TheBat instead Outlook (bagging too)
4. Do not opened (and get) unknown mailes with bad attaches.
5. Antivirus (optionally).
6. Work with limit user profile (Not Admine!!!). Limit user can`t save bad files to system place

Been OK since I quit downloading.

I had Norton a few years back and still got nailed while downloading avatars from a Russian site. I then bought McAfee and got nailed again downloading avatars from a Polish site. After that I decided no matter how good your software protection is suspposed to be, there is probably something that will get through it if you download the wrong thing. Those two attacks cost me about $500US to recover my data, so now I try not to download anything.

Norton is my best friend. If you are an advanced user of computer programs, you should have no problems. I have yet to catch anything serious. I will tell you though. The W32.Licum is a nasty one.

It attaches extra coding to any and all *.EXE files that are not zipped. Norton can repair most files, but not all. Make sure you keep your storage files that are only exe zipped up!
