Horrible Part Time Jobs

We've all had them. What's been your worst experience?

Since I'm 16 I've only had one job, and it was pretty bad.

I worked at a Bagel Street Cafe, so I had to make the sandwiches, clean tables, operate the cash register, stock things, make coffee, and prep for closing. Since I had to do everything at the same time I would get really flustered and start to panic if it was 5 and I still hadn't started cleaning (I finished at 6.) Then you add in the horrible tips from the tip jar (max $7 a day) and the old men hitting on you...I'm SO glad I quit.

i worked at a sonic for 12 hours when i was 16.
they schedualed me to close on school nights after i told them i couldnt, and didnt have the schedual ready by the time they wanted me to work, so i had no idea i was "supposed" be there because it wasnt ready when i checked at closing the day before. then they got mad at me for showing up 2 hours late, when i got out of school. i quit that day.

Around 16 I had my first real job, a summer job at a caterer/event maker. It wasn't so bad, since the big boss didn't mind that we, the "working class", would gobble up some nice opened bottles of whisky, red wine, caviar, lobster and such. But I was 16 at the time so I was mostly into juices, though coca cola and and whisky can be a nice mix. I got hammered by it at one time, with a colleague while we were setting up tables at a big event that was going to happen at an air base. We were all alone at this huge hangar and it was fun.
The food was great, we got to stay at some of the best hotels and the pay was nice, specially for a guy who had never got anything more than an allowance.

Well, what bad experiences have to do with this? A big no-no was that we didn't had a a fixed work schedule, so we usually did a lot of work hours. My record is 25 hours straight, during the opening of a mall, and it wasn't unusual to do 12-16 hours of work per day, so despite the amenities, it could get brutal.

Well so far I have you beat!

I worked for two years as a grave digger! That's right...I would dig the graves at the cemetary. The pay was great, but there were no set hours. I would get a call that we were needed, me and two of my friends would go dig the graves and set up everything that was needed. (tents, chairs, whatever). Then we would cool it for about 2-3 hours waiting for everything to be finished. Once the funeral was over we had to fill in the grave and take down the tents/chairs.

The job paid about $12/hr and it was under the table, (tax free). Also, I was getting paid for just waiting for the funeral to end...the bad part was just the gravity of what you were doing! I mean once the whole was dug out, here you are standing in a 6 ft grave! Very eerie! Also, there were no set hours, since you never know when someone is going to die!

Heck of a job, CC1. I dated the funeral home owner's grandson in high school. He was kind of apprenticing for the mortician. He didn't want to just stand around in a suit,, he wanted to be hands-on...*shiver*

As for me, I was a car hop at a drive-in restaurant called Dick's Drive-In. Yeah, that's right. Their slogan was "If you like hot dogs, you'll love Dick's!" I had to do the same thing as Dragon Chan pretty much. Fill up ketchup bottles, do stock, clean up the greasy floors and everything else. Also, having people lay on their car horns when you're right in front of their cars, people not putting their windows up high enough for the trays, etc. lol Having to deal with advances from the boss and countless others... Oh, the life of a waitress.

I've had many part time jobs though...some that other people would probably say sucked, but actually were not that bad!

I worked a as a janitor for McDonalds once. People always saw ewwww, but I never handled the food, fry vat, stood over a hot grill, was embarrassed by working the register or drive thru, none of that! All I did was sweep, empty the trash, wipe tables....and I made $1 an hour more than the others!

Doesn't sound like much, but I also got to make out with the manager every night

K I worked the last 4 years every summer for 3 weeks in this hellhole....but it pays good 8,8 $/hour.The only bad thing about it that it starts (morning shift) at 6am till 14pm...I'm tired like hell atm!!I had to lift these heavy mothaf.... every day 8 hours long...so it's pretty hard work !! The years before that I worked at a plantfarmer trimming small trees(suckjob),at my aunt company(sorting foam pillows(I had to sneeze the whole day...and when you cut yourself it stings in the wound) + do some lawnmowing....suckjob too !!! And I worked from April till yesterday a few days a week in a restaurant washing dishes(sucks ever harder)....but I got the money to go to Japan

so it's worth it !!

I think that my worst summer job would have to be the two weeks that I spent out in an open field digging up plants and transporting them for use on the deteriorating coastline here in south LA. The heat was ridiculous, and we had to wear jeans because of the tall grass, and fear of snakes and of spiders. We also had to get up at 5 a.m. to get out there and hopefully get some work done before the sun really started to beat down on us. That isn't easy for a nocturnal creature like me. And then there was the smell of the mud, you know, like sewage. I never really did understand that whole phenomenon, but then again, I never really thought about it too much. Of course, the pay was $9/hr. cash, so that was nice. But that was about all that was nice about it.

They were attempting to get them ready to go home to their families; most had been in bad accidents. One would stay in the shower for hours on end. One screamed "drop dead Fred" unless sleeping.One hid food everywhere, so the ants moved in.One broke into local homes and ate all their food.Some would fight at the drop of a hat. Two guys would have sex if you didn't keep them apart. Each day was an adventure, I was happy when the 2 months were up!!

It sounds very interesting to me. I think it is one of the idealest summer jobs. Can you tell me how you got that job? Do you have to study sociology or medicine?

Pay is low, $7 to $10 US an hour. Benifits are non-existant unless you work 32 hours or more a week. There is no retirement plan. What you see, hear , and smell would make most people sick.Chances are you will hurt your back sooner or later. When you do home care work, you're on your own & usually way over your head when things go wrong. It's kinda like being a cop, you don't do it for the money; you feel someone has to do the job, so you do it. I wouldn't wish it on anybody! I've been doing it about 11 years now and LOVE it!

I think I will volunteer (can I do that?) during the weekends b/c I just luv money too much to quit my current job. But I am 5'4 and 101 lbs. Do you think that is a problem?

Last time Red Cross wouldn't even let me donate blood. They said I was too weak & blah blah blah. I always like crazy people and sometimes I would give them food, clothes and changes, but that's about it. Actually I think what they really need is LOVE. Eh, I really can't help them with that.

You Can, Depending On Your Age....

probably volunteer at any nurseing home near you. Many offer free training in CNA to get you to work there. It will give you a chance to see if you like that type of job. You will be limited in what you can do because of insurance regulation, but just keep your eyes & ears open, and you can learn a lot!

Errrrrr, I already changed my mind...

I volunteered at some nursing homes before, but they never mentioned any C.N.A. training to me. Maybe because in Canada it is more difficult for people to get employments, so they don窶冲 want volunteers? It pays around Cdn$13 per hour. A friend just told me she quitted after the first day. Another friend told me she quitted after one week. They told me exactly what they had to deal with窶ｦ every detail... errr窶ｦ.definitely not very decent窶ｦ

I was just amazed by how good the Volunteering Organizer could read people. He always assigned me to distribute food in the kitchen, or to help senior citizens to file their tax returns, and make sure they get the social welfare they are entitled to. Eerr, I think that窶冱 all I can do. I am a very impatient person I don窶冲 think I can be a C.N.A. ever.

My only other job besides my current one (which isn't particularly interesting) was only for 3 days as a security guard at a flower show. I was like: "Hey granny! Drop the daffodil and move away from the gazebo display!"....only joking, I mean c'mon, old ladies looking at flowers - what trouble are you gonna get. It payed well though.

Actually, there was one funny moment - we weren't allowed to let people go out and come back in and some woman wanted to get some money from the bank, which I though was a fair enough reason but just to be on the safe side I told her to ask one of the senior guards at the gate. She must have been really annoyed that I didn't let her out. But the funny thing was that during the 5 minutes she was gone she must have tried really hard to think of something to say to me and the best she could come up with was: "Isn't it past your bedtime?" (I was 16, but looked 13) I would have laughed in her face if she hadn't have ran away immediately.
