A painting by the Ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎, 1760–1849), showing a woman standing alone in falling snow, had reached a record sum of 621 million yen — the highest price ever achieved for one of his works. The winning bid at the auction held on Saturday by Tozai New Art Co. came from Nitori Co., the Sapporo-based home-furnishings company.
Experts familiar with Hokusai's work said the painting likely dates to the period between 1813 and 1819, when he signed his works as Taitō. They explained that the woman in the scene is generally understood to be a courtesan from Edo's Yoshiwara district, and that the picture was created well before the early 1830s, when Hokusai embarked on his famous "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji."
The auction house added that the previous record for a Hokusai piece had been set only last year at Christie's in New York, where a set of woodblock prints from the Thirty-Six Views series sold for US$3.56 m. According to Nitori, the newly acquired painting will go on display at the Otaru Ukiyo-e Museum in Hokkaidō , which the Nitori Culture Foundation operates.
