A statuette modelled after a 1928 caricature of the nouveau riche (成金栄華時代) by artist Wada Kunibō (和田邦坊, 1899-1992) has unexpectedly surged in popularity.

The figurine's design is based on a satirical depiction of a man who became extremely wealthy after World War I. In the caricature, he ostentatiously burns a 100-yen note, inquiring if the light from the flame makes it easier for a lady to find her shoes in the darkness. This painting is well-known in Japan as it is included in historical educational books.
