His Majesty the Emperor's New Year's Remarks: "Marking 80 Years Since the End of the War, May This Be a Year We Can Walk Forward with Hope" (January 1, 2025)
The Imperial Household Agency released new footage of the Imperial Family and shared His Majesty the Emperor's New Year's remarks.
The Emperor, Empress, and their eldest daughter, Princess Aiko, were shown viewing traditional masks and drumsticks used in the "Gojinjo Daiko" performance, a tradition from Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture. Marking one year since the Noto Peninsula earthquake, the Imperial Household Agency noted that the Imperial Family once again expressed their hope for a secure life for those affected and progress in Ishikawa's recovery efforts.
On the New Year, His Majesty the Emperor shared his reflections: "This year marks the 80th anniversary of the war's end. Since the end of the war, our nation's peace and prosperity have been built through the unrelenting efforts of many people. At the same time, I feel profound sorrow over the many lives still being lost around the world due to wars and conflicts. I believe in the importance of people recognizing each other's differences and working together in unity to build a peaceful world."
He concluded with the wish: "May this New Year be one in which the people of our nation and the world can walk forward with hope."
The Imperial Family will attend the New Year's Celebration Ceremony at the Imperial Palace on January 1 and participate in the public New Year's greeting event on January 2. On January 1, Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita will receive greetings from other members of the Imperial Family at their residence, the Sento Imperial Palace.
During the public New Year's greeting, the Empress Emerita, currently undergoing rehabilitation for a fractured right thigh bone, is expected to join the Emperor Emeritus and appear on the palace balcony three times in the morning. Prince Akishino and Princess Akishino, along with their second daughter, Princess Kako, will also participate in New Year events. Prince Hisahito, who became an adult member of the Imperial Family last year, is expected to attend Imperial events after his coming-of-age ceremony and his high school graduation in March.

On New Year's Day, Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress attended the "New Year's Celebration Ceremony" at the Imperial Palace.
Around 11 a.m., Their Majesties received greetings from representatives of both houses of the Diet in the Pine Room of the palace. His Majesty remarked, "I am truly delighted to celebrate the New Year together," and added, "At the start of the year, I pray for the people's happiness and the nation's development."
The Imperial women attended wearing tiaras, with Their Majesties' eldest daughter, Princess Aiko, donning the tiara formerly worn by her aunt, Ms. Sayako Kuroda. In light of the passing of Princess Yuriko, Princess Mikasa, in November last year, members of the Mikasa and Takamado branches of the Imperial Family refrained from attending. In the afternoon, Their Majesties received congratulations from ambassadors and representatives of approximately 130 countries and regions, many of whom were dressed in traditional attire. Tomorrow, the New Year's General Audience, where Their Majesties and other members of the Imperial Family will receive greetings from the public, will be held.
