Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site so slowly making my way around! I moved to Japan from Brisbane, Australia 3 weeks ago and am teaching English over here. So far I've settled in fairly well - I studied Japanese during High school but that was 6 years ago so i'm still waiting for all that knowledge to come back! I'll probably spend about 6 months teaching before travelling through Japan I think.

Besides that I spend alot of time looking up places I should go to visit. The place I'm living is a small city/town, about 1 1/2 hours away from Hiroshima so there's not that much to do here. If anyone has any suggestions on places I should see while in Japan please feel free to tell me - the more help the better!

Ok well looking forward to exchanging ideas!

Hi Kellbell, nice to meet you here! I must say i've been meaning to visit Brisbane for quite a few years now, but never made it to Oz yet.

I'm also new to the Forum, but been having a blast here already, and I'm sure you will too

Which direction do you live away from Hiroshima? That'll make it easier for people to give good recommendations I think. I have a friend who studied at Hiroshima Uni but the campus was a little way away, so she may be able to offer suggestions. The problem is she's out in the sticks near Nara now and can't get online much, though I can text her mobile for you. Anyway, i'm sure people around here will be able to help!

Hi Kellbell!
I'd suggest a trip to Miya-jima. You can get there by ferry from Hiroshima.
The island itself is very small and has a wonderful wooden shrine with large torii (gate) which is sticking out from the sea when water level is high.
there are also some nasty deers which would pinch you in the back for snacks and if you take a walk to the mountains you may also have a close encounter with monkeys
I don't know on which side of Hiroshima you live, but Shikoku would also be a nice option if you're into seeing some of rural Japan. As far as I recall castle in Matsuyama (Ehime prefecture) is quite impressive
