I went to Japan 5 years ago on a student exchange program. However, I have since lost contact with my host family. Digging through old drawers I found their address and phone number. When i try to dial the phone number it doesnt work.
(082)221-6923
Is there some kind of counrty code that I have to input?

So i figure I'll try a letter. I was wondering what would be the right way to write this on an envelope to ensure its arival=
4-9, 3 CHOME, USHITASHINMACHI, HIGASH-KU, HIROSHIMA-SHI 732-0068
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, nakeday!

Your host family lives quite near my mother.

To call Japan, you need to add 81 before the telephone number. Also, skip the 0 in 082.

So you must dial 81-82-hostfamilysnumber.

Hope it helps.

yeh it was actually some kind of Buddhist temple. I stayed with the "caretakers." I was a great experience. thanks for the phone info. By any chance do you know how to say I should ask for a certain person to talk to if they answer? example, "May I speak with_____please."? thanks again

Simulation dialogue:

Hiroshima: Moshi, moshi.

Nakeday: Moshi, moshi. [Name of temple] desuka? Watashi wa "Nakeday" to moushimasu. Ano....[name of person] wa irasshaimasuka?

Hiroshima: Hai, imasu. Shou shou omachikudasai. (You wait for the person to come to the phone.)

*If the person is not there and you want the person to know you called and will call back tomorrow:

Hiroshima: Ee...ima orimasen.

Nakeday: Ano...America no "Nakeday" toiu mono ga kara denwa ga atta to dake otsutae kudasai. Mata ashita kakenaoshimasu.

Hiroshima: Hai, wakarimashita.

Nakeday: Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. Gomenkudasai.

Hope this helps. FYI, sometimes it doesn't work this way--but you get the idea, since you've been in Japan before! Never mind minor mistakes in courtesy! People can tell when you are sincere or not!

WOW! really thanks alot this helps so much im gonna see what time to call now. arigatou gozaimasu

Sorry, nakeday! There's a typo!!

THIS ONE:
Nakeday: Ano...America no "Nakeday" toiu mono ga kara denwa ga atta to dake otsutae kudasai. Mata ashita kakenaoshimasu.

SKIP THE "GA"!!
