Former US Vice President Al Gore, now visiting Tokyo, has urged Japanese business leaders to play a leading role in the fight against global warming.

Mr Gore is in Tokyo to promote his documentary film, "An Inconvenient Truth," which deals with global warming. The film will be released on Saturday in major Japanese cities.

In a lecture on Monday, he told some 400 Japanese business leaders that the crisis is not political problem, but a moral one.

Mr Gore urged Japanese companies to help boost worldwide action against global warming, saying that Japanese private firms have cutting-edge technologies for environmental protection and energy conservation.

If the sea level raises by a few feet due to global warming, how much of Japan would be submerged under water? It's difficult to make people act if they don't feel an immediate impact on their lives.

A moral one?You think so?
Yes, why wouldn't you think it was a moral descision to act in the best interests of the people of the entire planet...

...Gore isn't using this as a means to get elected, he's not even running for anything.

What can you do to stop it? Shoot arrows into the sky and hope it hits global warming.

No one is going to listen because no one cares.

The U.S. government is just beginning to admit that global warming exists. I know some European countries are doing something about it already.

I think Gore has been shown recently to be pretty much of a huckster. Just a modern day version of the old travelling snake oil salesman.

Ah spoken like a true liberal here, kind of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" agree with you.

To me there are much more pressing, truly, moral issues facing the planet that the supposed "global" warming topic should be taking a back seat to.

Over population, lack of affordable health care all over the world, the ever growing gap between the "have's" and the "have nots" among a long list of items that should be discussed well before "global" warming.

I wonder how much Gore got in appearance fees for coming over here to talk about this topic? I'll bet it wasn't for free and I'll also bet that he isn't donating the money he gets on helping to stop the problem either.

I didn't hear about him coming over here on a sailing ship, he flies around on jumbo jet's, which supposedly are one of the biggest "causes" of global warming.

Sounds pretty hypocritical to me.

Gore has become a joke... similar to the way global warming should be treated. Seriously, ask any meterologist who actually knows what they're talking about rather than being told about the subject, and global warming will be one of the last things on your mind.

Yes, it's too difficult a problem and the obstacles are too big, so we should just give up and forget about it, because there is nothing we can do. I shudder to think about the outcome of conflicts throughout history if everyone had this dire outlook.

I think he might be more like Chicken Little than a huckster; and what does he have to gain...? Self-respect, he seemed to have that before he made the film, recognition--- I mean recognition beyond that of a man beaten by a draft-doding politcal patsy... Who knows. I don't think his motives are as insideous as the Man who sold Hadleyburg.

I'm really not much of a liberal, I don't have the same sort of pretend pity for the tired poor and huddled masses that so-called liberals do... And if you say "liberal", it's more of a sort of schizm than it is a politcal belief---

Regardless if you feel that it's a lower priortity there are a group of people (lobyists, think-tanks) who actively seek to create the opinion not that the problem is a low priority, but that it doesn't exactly exist.

I honestly think you'll see acords on global warming far before you see any sort of progress on nations making honest attempts to combat income inequality.

So, when someone makes money for what they do, and I don't know what his appearace fees were, if they did exist, it invalidates whatever message they have...?

Maybe he should have come to Japan on a solar powered flotilla.

I don't agree with you about Gore becoming a "joke"... nor do I agree with your assessment with Global Warming, and I don't think I would ask a meterologist anything about global warming...

[...]In contrast to meteorology, which studies short term weather systems lasting up to a few weeks, climatology studies the frequency with which these weather systems occurred in the past. It studies the periodicity of weather events over years to millennia, as well as changes in long-term average weather patterns, in relation to atmospheric conditions. Climatologists, those who practice climatology, study both the nature of climates - local, regional or global - and the natural or human-induced factors that cause climates to change. Climatology considers the past and can help predict future climate change.
It's climatologists who you'd prefer to ask.

lol so meteorologists can't study climotology...? Well, ok, so much for that. Guess I should tell him to stick to his own subject and never ever research anything else besides meteorology...

I'm not going to ask people who's basic job it is to give television viewers an educated guess about the weather that week, no.

Global warming is a real issue that needs to be addressed, but I agree that there are other more pressing issues to address first.

Maybe just focus on the reduction of Sulfur and Nitrogen Oxides first? Then we could tackle the bigger problems.

Kind of surprising to see that no-one hasn't mentioned the controversy surrounding his high electricity bill, as claimed by.. Well, I haven't found a reliable source to be honest. 😌

I think it is an interesting issue though. I have not yet looked into the matter that much, and I am not convinced that humans are causing global warming. But independent of the causality I think it's necessary to try and reduce the people's dependence on finite natural resources, like oil, for the simple reason that they're finite and therefore not sustainable in the long run.

Anyways, I also have doubts about Al Gore's "non-political" motives.. It would not surprise me one bit if he decided to run for president again. His popularity is rising, also thanks to the succes of his movie, and he could very well use this rise in popularity as a "the population needs me" kind of reason to re-run..

Don't get me wrong, I'm not some sort of rabid Gore supporter--- I'm pretty apathetic about him, though I'm glad he's getting some sort of attention for basically what I think is a just cause... But, according to Reuters, he's already announced that he's not going to be running for president in 2008... If he were, I think he would have announced it by now, unless he's going to repel in to the demographic convention at the last moment in a "saves the day" moment.

I dont think that global warming should even be an issue right now.

Scientists were predicting a new ice age as recently as 30 years ago. Now they are saying that the earth is headed for catastrophic consenquences due to global warming in the near future if something isn't done about it now.

Scientists can not even agree on whether or not global warming is a serious concern.

Personally I find it funny that all these supposed experts are predicting in some cases doomsday scenarios but they can't even get the weather forecast right for the next few days or following week. But they can predict what is going to happen 20 or 30 years from now? Yeah right.....

While I support evironmental protection, particularly for the rain forests and I also support funding for research and production of alternative renewable fuel sources I don't see the issue of global warming to be that big of a deal.

On whether or not Gore is going to run or not I don't care, I think a ticket of Hillary and Gore would be a great way for the Democrats to lose any chance of winning back the White House. But then that is a different topic altogether, just have to wait until later this year to see what happens. No matter what the press is reporting.
