It may be clarified in the coming sentences, but if I got that correct, what could it mean by "gathered the power of what remained of civilization".

"人類の未来を憂いた者達" is a single noun phrase. The English is a little awkward sounding, but the subject of the sentence is not 'The People' as a whole further described by their feelings about the future, but rather -only- 'those people who were concerned about the future'.
The difference in translation is only a small change in phrasing but a substantial change in meaning, IMO.

Interesting, I don't think there is any way I could know that, even now, I guess that type of understanding must come with experience. Thanks for the input.
 
Why did you change your previous translation "the future of mankind" to "their future"?
(FYI, your translation is for そのさなかに、その者達は自らの未来を憂い、残された文明の力を結集し、……. Cay you see the difference now?)

I don't know what the red part means. The dictionary gives meanings of "handicap" and "pretense" but I don't know how to make that fit. Also 剣 is pronounced つるぎ right?

その前後 is more likely "around that time". "Amidst" is さなか, as I wrote.

ふり(= 振り) is a counter for sword.

つるぎ is not wrong, but けん is more common.

４ふりの剣を携える者 sounds strange, is it an idiom? Meaning skilled with a sword?
 
No. He literally carries four swords; Swords of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder.

Ok let's have a go the next sentence, which I am quite uncertain about.

ひとりは少女。大いなる力の器を胸に秘め、少年を、天の彼方へ導く。
One of them is a girl. She secretly harbors a growing power of being a vessel and will lead the boy to heaven.

胸に秘め looks to me like "keeping something close to your chest", ie keeping a secret.

I said that the girl will lead the boy to "heaven", I realize I only said heaven despite the Japanese saying 天の彼方. I don't understand what 天の彼方 means so that's why I only said "heaven". Also is 彼方 pronounce あちら or かなた?

I think what is referred to as a 器 might be what is called a channel in English, or a medium, someone who channels spirits and becomes a vessel for them.
 
器 can mean "ability" or something. I don't know the story of the game, so I can't identify what 器 refers to exactly.

Here's the next sentence:

彼ら、世界に再び黒雲立ち込めんとする時、天の呼び声 により、長き眠りから目覚める。

Before I can try translating, could you tell me about the 立ち込めん verb form please? I'm unfamiliar with it. I'd look it up myself right now but I don't know what to type into Google. :(

Also I can't find 長き in the dictionary. Is that a classic form and how is it pronounced?
 
立ち込めんとする and 長[なが]き (and 持ち and 沈黙させん in the next sentence) are classical Japanese, equivalent to 立ち込めようとする, 長い, 以って, 沈黙させるだろう in modern Japanese, respectively.

OK then let's have a go at this.

彼ら、世界に再び黒雲立ち込めんとする時、天の呼び声により、長き眠りから目覚める。

When the world is about to be once again shrouded in dark clouds, a call from heaven will awaken them from a long sleep.

Is that correct?
 
Year, that's correct. Purely grammatically, 黒雲（が）立ち込める and （彼らは）目覚める are both active voice, but you understand the meaning correctly.
 
彼ら、その力を持ち、黒雲払い、裁きを告げる天の声を沈黙させん。

Before I can attempt this, I'm going to need 黒雲払い explaining because it looks like "dark cloud payment", and that makes no sense to me at all.
 
I didn't realize 払い also mean "clear away" so yeah that does actually make sense to me now.

彼ら、その力を持ち、黒雲払い、裁きを告げる天の声を沈黙させん。

Now this part is giving me trouble. 裁きを告げる天の声 to me looks like "The voice of heaven informed judgment", how does one inform judgment? I must be translating it wrong.
 
Xを告げる is to announce, inform, convey, etc, the information "X". You use に to mark what's being "informed". e.g. 人々に裁きを告げる. What dictionary are you using? Does it not show example sentences?

In addition, your translation doesn't reflect the modifying clause (天の声 is modified/described by 裁きを告げる). There's a big difference between 猫は魚を食べる (describing the action or habit of a cat or cats) and 魚を食べる猫 (describing a cat/cats, grammatically this whole phrase can be treated like a noun). Modifying clauses are something that seem to trip a lot of learners up but they're also very very common.
 
I use edict from JWP, I also use sanseido. No examples there though.

裁きを告げる天の声を沈黙させん

沈黙させん = cause/allow silence?

It seems to me the 天の声 that was informing people of the 裁き fell silent. Is that the basic gist of this part of the sentence?

彼ら、その力を持ち、黒雲払い、裁きを告げる天の声を沈黙させん。
Using that power they silenced the voice of heaven that was signaling their judgement.

Is signaling/portending ok? Is any of that ok?
 
My first reaction when I see "させん" is to imagine its in a negative shape, as in "させぬ" or "かもしれん"
Is it the case here?
