Free domain name

Anyone know if there's still free domain names out there? I had one in the past but they started charging, I forgot what it was called.

Luc : Tokelau islands. Search for .tk . I think there are a few pop-ups but nothing murderous.

I see you're from Canada, domains cost at a minimum 20/year here. I have www.kintaro.ca , but I do not have a good layout and until I do, I'm not putting anything there yet.

Some hosts provided free domain name registration if you sign up for their (paid) service.
Domain names are cheap these days. Going at around $7-$8 US dollars. Give up a lunch or two and you have a domain name for a year.

Don't confuse a web host with a web domain. Some people make this confusion, but you really need both to have a website online.

Nowadays web domains are quite cheap and you can get one by 8 bucks or less, but if you can't have access to a credit card, you can also try a free url redirecton service, like cjb.net for instance. It's free but you will get some pop-ups and a domain like yourdomain.cjb.net.

Luc, $30USD covers more than just a domain name purchase. Usually that will include a company to park your domain and give you some space on the hosts server. If you want to just register a domain by itself, it's fairly inexpensive. But still, $30USD a year isn't too much money!

It's $30 if you register from big name companies like Network Solutions or such. There are many small name companies that provided cheap domain names where service is really good. You just have to look around.

If you can't get a .US, .COM, .NET or a .ORG domain for less that 10 bucks, then they are ripping you off.

I've been thinking about getting a cjb.net address, but it's just a redirect address or whatever right? I have to find somewhere else to put all my pictures and files and such right?

Check Gandi.net: Domain Names, Web Hosting, SSL Certificates It's a French company (site English & French) which offers any common domain (com, net, org, ...) for 12$/euro a year.

Road Runner Gives You a Web Domain space...

as part of their package. I reserved a space but haven't had a chance to make use of it. The whole package is expensive, but they do offer a lot of services. The big problem is they're not available everywhere.

I'm using a university server, and I have never had to get a bad rap from anyone about my web site. I still have my page, after 2-ish years. And I'm not even a student at the school, and I have my own web page. Don't really care about the domain, though.

Domains were free--way back . . .

. . . in the very early days of the net. Nowadays you have to buy them. As mentioned above, you can pay over $30/year, just for the registration (web and email hosting are extra), but they can be had for much less.

The place I like is ichibanweb.com because besides being cheap ($7.85/year), they also have a POP/SMTP mailbox service for folks who don't want to buy web site hosting. The mailbox is only $8.95/year, so you can get a domain and email box for less than $17.00/year. At less than Y2,000/year, that rocks!
