A Japanese man in his 20s, who had joined Russian forces in Ukraine, died last month in the Donetsk region, according to sources. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed on 23 July that the man was a former member of Japan's Self-Defense Forces but did not disclose his name or the circumstances of his death. This marks the first reported death of a Japanese national in the conflict, with the man passing away on 3 June. Russian authorities informed the Japanese Embassy in Moscow on 5 June, and his identity was confirmed by 15 July.

Japan on Tuesday advised its citizens to avoid involvement in Russia's war in Ukraine.
