It'll be my first time in Japan, and I really don't have any sightseeing in mind, so I guess I'll place shopping as a priority. Would it be advisable to stay at a hotel near JR Shinjuku station, or JR Tokyo station?
For shopping I would probably pick Shinjuku for these reasons:
It's close to Shibuya and Harajuku/Omottesando on Yamanotte line
It's direct on Sobu line to Akihabara
It's direct to Ginza on Marunouchi line
And it's easy to get to from Narita

Because the Tokyo Station outskirts are office towns,
Shopping is inconvenient.

There is a bus from Narita to a hotel of Shinjuku. リムジンバスの東京空港交通
