English level at japanese schools

In the last 1-2 years, English became a mandatory course for elementary school students in the 5th and 6th grades. That means once a week lessons. Other elem ed grades get a random once a month lesson.
Junior high has 3 years of English, as does senior high. Technically, the courses are not mandatory, but 99% of schools enroll the students that way.
Textbooks will vary depending on whether you talk about a private, public, or international school. Public school textbooks must be approved by the Ministry of Education. I don't know about international schools, but private schools select their own.

1. JET Program is the best way for people to come to Japan (minimal Japanese language needed, good financial support, best wages for entry level work, good support system, etc.).
2. The language level of "the students" varies with their age. You might be an ALT in an elementary school (hardly any English at all), junior high, or senior high. High school kids have lost any enthusiasm for studying English because of the way it is taught by their Japanese teachers. They get hardly any practice speaking and listening especially in their last 1-2 years of school because they are studying for college entrance exams, so they can barely piece together a coherent sentence. I'm not kidding.
