ex: sama, san, chan, kun

sama = mr., ms., miss., mrs. (polite form of san - used addressing letters), chan = no certain meaning (mostly used talking to children), kun = no certain meaning (used by males talking to subordinate males) and sensei = teacher (only one able to be used alone)

"chan" is used when you feel you have a strong affinity to someone. So a girlfriend who calls his boyfriend say, "keisuke chan" would be fine. "chan" can be used to refer to both males and females, but usually younger females would be called by that.
