My sister has moved out of our house now, and I am turning her bedroom into a Traditional Japanese bedroom. The only thing I cannot afford to get is Tatami mat flooring. Any suggestions for what I should do?

I was told to paint the walls pure white and I am saving up for some Futons. Any other ideas?

Thank you.

Pure white? My own home is pretty much entirely wafu and I don't have any pure white rooms heh. I think you should go with a more subtle look, possibly using earth/pastel colors.. If you can't acquire tatami and are starting from scratch, you could always go for the traditional wood flooring although that would probably be more expensive. Try doing an image search on Yahoo for ex. of tatami/traditional Japanese rooms and you'll see a plethora of interior designs to browse.

I made a sample of what I think are the right colors and added the color code with it:

Yah, nice. That and maybe a little darker green also for contrast.

I agree with Iron Chef and Damicci about the colour scheme. 👍
I found an interesting pages on the net, they are colour samples of the interior finishing materials a specialized company is offering for walls.
You'll find the colours very close what Ayu-youkou suggested. (So he's quite right, too.)

Traditional ones:

(Note: bluish & purplish ones are rather modern.)

A bit modern ones:

Checking the above samples, I'm surprised to see that the traditional ones can be quite dark. 😌

They are nice colours but I think they would be quite dark to paint a whole room. Maybe one wall one of the darker colours and use a cream colour for the other walls, or something sandy coloured.

Pure white walls seems like a rather Western or at least modernist choice. Isn't pure white associated with death in traditional Japanese culture, or is that just clothing?

I was possibly thinking of going cream like Kinsao suggested and using the other schemes for other decoration. I do want to be simple but I still want it to look nice.

Since I was going to paint the walls cream, I am unsure about a colour for the skirting board (the woodwork).

Maybe the colour that was #bda889?
